Does anyone know of a *nix solution for DV to MPEG-2 transcoding? I have searched around a bit and I'm getting hints that DV and MPEG-2 are not all that different, and since I'm about to get a Formac Studio, which provides video input in DV format, I'm wondering if there are any available transcoders that would be able to create MPEG-2 streams faster than a full conversion to MPEG-2. My initial investigations suggest that the LSX-MPEG (Ligos software for Windows) can do this if you're running on a PC, and I've located a program called "transcode" which seems to be able to take DV input but yet doesn't seem to be able to output MPEG-2 (it's primarily for transcoding to MPEG-4).
Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it too much to hope for that the Mac standard video input format DV can be reasonably quickly transcoded to MPEG-2? My web searches have not yielded very much information on this, but maybe someone out there has some firsthand knowledge...
