Crazy question... but is it possible to utilize a four proccesor system with TMPEG? what are some things, hardware wise that will improve TmpegENC encoding time?
Another question:
Is it possible to encode through a computer cluster? I read an article somewhere that Mandrake? is making computer clustering simpler and more possible... is there a way that TmpegENC to utilize clusting technology? Perhaps win2k advance server can do something?
Sorry for all the questions... but I wan to see how shorth I can reall cut my encoding time. Thanks a million.

You could always use 2 pcs to encode half each and then join the two halves together afterwards.
-
I guess that is possible, but it doesn't sound as efficient as I usually encode as one large file and then cut it up later.
-
Yes, but you could still use 1 PC to encode, let's say, 3 movies in batch encode mode and the same for 2nd PC, couldn't you?

TmpGenc can support dual processors but I am not sure if it will take advantage of any more than that. I suppose if you are frameserving and applying filters before encoding then it would help.

Anyway, Tmpgenc cannot take advantage of a cluster. AFAIK, apps have to be specially written to do so and not all applications are suited to the clustering approach. Clustering is more suited to handling lots of small jobs, like serving web pages to lots of people, rather than one big job like encoding. -
So your saying have 2 PC's to encode 1 movie per PC?
Does anyone know if there is a Hardware based Mpeg Encoder that can spruce up times with encoding? My goal is to ame encoding in real time or half of real tim. -
yes Mandrake is a Linux distro... but I read somewhere that they are making a distro with easy clustering configurations. I doubt tmpegEnc is linux based, is it?

i have a quad system and also a dual xeon system with hyperthreading (acts like 4 cpu and 4 cpu shows up in taskmanager) ..
tmpgenc above 1.2 version do not use all 4 cpus .. only 2 and only the second one for some proccessing (not always in use) ..
older version tmpgenc used 4 cpu's -- in theory , but was not really a lot faster..
the only app that uses all 4 cpu AND takes full use of hyperthreading is the new version of Main Concept (version 1.3) ... it screams in speed - very easly beating CCE UNLESS your frame serving with a lot of pre-proccessing as color proccessing etc will also bottle up the memory bandwidth.. (and i have a wholeloto of memory on both machines but thier is still the issue of the bandwidth of the system) ..
main concept can peg all 4 cpu's at about 80-90% .. of course the rest of your system should be optimised also.
cce is supposed to be SMP optimized i think .. but it does not perfom well at all in a hyperthreaded set up - so you have to config your bios settings depending which app your going to use (pain) .. CCE does work well in a dual setup .. -
BJ_M,
Nice, what motherbaord and cpu's are you running in that quad system?
What kinda of encoding speeds do you get? Close to realtime, if not better?
I'm not familar with Main concept.... only with TmpegEnc. -

dual is ibm intellistation mpro (msi 6805 motherboard, one of the really best out right now for stability and compatibility)
other specs in my profile ..
most of my encoding is high def .. dvd quality is real time or better.
there is network rendering with a lot of apps we use - which works just like clustering really.
a typical render farm is 25-100 and up machines ... connected together to do rendering
