DVD-R is not more compatible that DVD+R, they are about the same. Having Said that Do NOT buy the HP DVD 100i as it does not support DVD+R, only DVD+RW.
If you do decide to go for DVD+RW and want to buy HP then buy the HP DVD 200i. Sony have a drive that will burn both formats although many people seem to be having problems with the Sony drive. -
I would say that the best two on the market are the
DVR A05/105 Vs. Sony DRU500a with the DVR A04/104 comming in a close third.
Personally I would buy the Pioneer DVR's before the sony only because I never invest in first generation technology ( first dvd-+rw ). If price and compatibility are you two driving factors than the DVR 104 is a good choice. I picked up the CenDyne ( Pioneer 104 ) for good price of $199.
