  1. My comp has the following stats:

    Pentium 4 2.2 GHz
    256 Mb RD 800 RAM
    8x DVD
    80 Gig Hard Drive
    8x Burner
    32 Mb GeForce 2 Video

How much time would u estimate it would take to encode a TV Episode from a DVD?

    I use Smartripper>DVD2AVI>TMPG>Nero

    Smartripper 15-20 minutes
    DVD2AVI 15-20 minutes
TMPG> On mine 6-12 hours...fast PCs can approach less than real time so we will say 1 hour for you.
    Nero Burn> I burn at 2 or 4X reguardlee of burner specs...less erors that way...so 16 minutes.

    Total 1hour 56 minutes~ 2 hours

    Only a guess though

  3. My Way...
1)First I use SmartRipper to rip DVD to my hard drive.. (20mins)
if you're pressed for hard drive space you can do it from the dvd
but I think the quality is better from your hard drive when ripping.

2)Next I use DVDx to convert to mpg files. ( 6 hrs. depending onsize of movie ) (DVDx is kewl because you don't have to set the length of the film
it does it for you and fills a 700 perfectly...then it makes a 2nd mpg file with the reminder of the movie.

3)Next I use TMPGEnc if I want to edit movie..
ON the drop down menu select TOOLS

    4)Last I burn with NERO....

This process will make you VCD's take 2 cds per movie larger movies
    3.

Of course I would only back-up my dvds but this you already know!

I think the motion search in tmpgenc is one of the factors that affects speed.

    Normal = real time x 1.5
    High Q = realtime x 2
    very high Q = realtime x 3 or 4

Estimates only here not real numbers. Some will tell you choose HIGH Q only but your curiosity will make you choose very High Q (slowest) to get the best even though many will say it makes little difference.

Next may be the choice of bitrate type. Constant or vbr multipass.

Times vary with options chosen. With DVDx and using large mem option and the internal encoder, I rip and encode a movie in roughly realtime x 2 with a P4 1.6 (512 L2) and 512 DDR 333 ram.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  5. Well, which programs you'll use (especially encoder, TMPGEnc, CCE, ?) and settings (quality, passes...) will make the time vary a lot, so it's hard to say. Most definately will take some time.

  6. Use EazyVCD from www.eazyvcd.tk. Fast,Simple,HighQuality. For you i would think it would take an hour for a 30min tv show episode using that program. (thats if you set it to highest quality, using XVCD)
