It seems most conversation on this subject focuses on capture cards, however I was thinking about purchasing a reasonable priced digital camcorder or digital8 camcorder and using that to enable the capture of my old analog film. Any thoughts on using a digital camcorder versus a capture card for this?

If you are planning on getting the Digital Camcorder anyways + associated firewire ports and software for your PC then yes this is a decent plan. You just have to keep in mind that you want a camcorder that can do pass-trough mode so you can record directly onto your PC without having to record to tape first.
