  1. I would like to remove the black bars i have in an avi file. The size is 640x272. Can I do this in Vdub? (the black bars are not visible in Vdub). I have tried with resize filter but can't make it work properly. I think I read somewhere that the null transform should do the trick. How does that work? When I install the null transform filter and hit the crop bottom I don't see any black bars...

Please help stuck newbie who btw did search the forum but unable to find a solution.

You must cut the sides to get it in fullscreen (4:3 with no borders). If you use tmpgenc you can use the option no margin (keep aspect ratio) under settings->advanced and it will cut the sides. Use the file->preview in tmpgenc before you encode to vcd, svcd or dvd to see how it looks.

Note that you lose a lot of video when making it fullscreen(removing black borders)

  3. Hey B. and thanks for the reply. I might have to explain myself a bit better.

My problem has to do with subs. I've encoded a couple of avis into svcd by now and it all works just great. But i really would like to add permanent subbs into the svcd in the black bars - not in the picture. Therefore I've searched this and other forums for solutions and ideas and even aksed some newbie questions myself. So far without my thick head getting it yet.

So far I think i understand that I have to get rid of the black bars that i usually automaticly get in my svcd-encoding using "full size, keep aspect ratio". That is...cut them away - create my own black bars and emerge the subs there. I simply can't figure out how to get rid of the damn things before encoding with eg. tmpenc.

I would very much like to be able to do this in Vdub...if at all possible. I think some avisynth stuff is able to do the trick but thats way to advanced for me...

    Please...can anyone help me?

What do you mean by losing lots of video? Do you mean quality?

ShadowRider, no, Baldrick means, that that method will crop a lot of the video left and right.

boeniz, it should work if you take care of the order of the Vdub filters. First resize and add borders and then add the subtitles. Also pay attention to the subtitle format. Some formats difine the exact x/y position, some subtitles will simply added to the very bottom.

btw, although it is not necesarry to crop the borders, you can do that in Vdub too. Just select filter >add null transform >cropping.

er....I just re-read the thread. Well, the reason why you can not see any borders in Vdub is, that there are no borders...
If you use a resize filter of Vdub, add borders by checking the "expand frame and letterbox image"-option.
    Hope it helps.
