  1. I just got my system on the 18th, and am still learning so please bear with me. Also, apologies if this is the wrong area to post, but after lurking here for a few months before registering, I *think* it is the most appropriate.

My video card is an ATI All In Wonder Radeon 8500 (128 mb). I have it hooked up to my television cable system and it works just fine. I followed the instructions here http://www.vcdhelp.com/ATI_AIW_Guide.htm for perfect VCD 2.0 compliance. I captured Star Trek: Enterprise on Sunday Night, and then edited out the commercials using MyFlix 3.1.2 I generated the output as an mpeg file, and then used Nero 5.5.5.9 to make a VCD. When dragging the file to Nero, it stated that the file was not VCD 2.0 compliant (I literally though wtf, since I followed the instructions to do so).

So, I relaxed the restrictions, and burned the CD anyways. It plays on the DVD player without a hitch. So, my question is this; why does Nero complain?

I'll add as a follow up, that MyFlix 3.1.2 has an option to generate a file with a .vcd file extension. These files compile into Nero with no complaints. So, the sole difference between a complaint file and a non compliant file is extension, as below.

    test.mpg -------> Nero complains
test.vcd --------> Nero does not complain

    thanks for reading this.

Don't take this personally but when you say you followed everything to make it compliant we have to take you at your word. If you were off by a bit in the bitrate say 1250 it would not be compliant but would probably play fine in most players.

Can you give us the characteristics of your vcd.

    Mpeg type (1 or 2)
    Framesize (resolution)
    Video Bitrate
    Framerate
    Audio rate

and also did you specify NTSC or PAL in your VCD type.

There could be other reasons but could you answer these first.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  3. I don't take it presonally(I have a thick skin). But, I stated that I followed the instructions on this web site (here) to which I referred the url http://www.vcdhelp.com/ATI_AIW_Guide.htm

    NTSC (525)
    352x240
    44,100 Khz, 16 bit stereo
    visual masking on
    mpeg-1
    4 p frames
    2 b frames
    bit rate 1150000

again, this is from the guide that is listed here, at this web site. So i was rather puzzled by the fact that Nero complained. However, when I saved the edited mpeg-1 file with a .vcd extension....no complaints. You see my puzzlement? .vcd (no complaints), .mpg (complains, but still works fine).

If I'm doing something stpid, I'll gladly take lessons, but I followed the guide on this site to a 'T'.

    thanks for reading my post.

I'm sure you did it right everything looks right.

I see what you are saying but don't have a real answer

1)You could see who put the guide there and find out if anyone else had that problem.

2)Search the forum and see if its come up before.

If I was a betting person I would make sure that the B and P frame settings are in spec for vcd I don't know how much deviation the standard allows my settings are p=5 b=2.

It may be nothing but thats all I see.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Oh yes you didn't mention that you did the demux and remux step the author does say that the file is out of spec unless you do that step.

  6. You are correct. I did not demux/remux. The audio so far, has not fallen out of synch. It just puzzles me why am extension could cause Nero to complain

But, I'm a complete newbie and I will learn

    thanks for your replies.
