I know Cleaner 5 supports the G3 (albeit very slowly). What are the others?

I assume this has to be compiled and used with MediaPipe? I don't have a compiler actually. I wonder how much the developer tools are...

And I assume Cleaner 6 also supports the G3, although I didn't see it listed, and I don't have the coin for it anyway.

BitVice, now up to v 1.2.51

It's the best MPEG-2 encoder available for the Mac at all, imho. Been using it for two months, and getting the iMac G4/800 in less than five hours, droooool....

OK, I'm now a "developer" and got the developer tools. I'll try mpeg2enc soon enough.

Re: Cleaner 6: Am I correct in thinking that Cleaner 6 integrates that MPEG-2 software charger for two-pass VBR encoding that used to be separate for cleaner 5? It's also Altivec optimized, but that's irrelevant to the G3. However, they do state it supports the G3... but it's
    $600.

I want my IBM PPC 970 iMac now!

You don't need the developer tools for mpeg2enc. But no matter what encoder you have, MPEG-2 is going to be extremely slow on a G3 (believe me, I have one). I'd suggest sticking to VCD's/XVCD's or getting a G4 upgrade. I just got one and the encoding speed for MPEG-2 video is exponentially better.

Yeah, I know a G3 will be extremely slow, but fortunately for me I just do home video type stuff. So far my longest has been 15 minutes. (Who wants to watch more than 15 minutes of home movies? )

I was thinking G3 since my only Mac so far is an iBook. (I have a few faster PCs.)

Eventually I will purchase a new iBook, but there's no way I'll get one until they stop using G3s.

VCDs are not really an option because of the limited compatibility with DVD players and the quality. SVCDs are out of the question because of the extremely limited compatibility with DVD players.

  10. well, i'm a good old-fashioned wannabe 1337 guy. i'm ripping dvds to vcd (i've been shot down in my svcd attempts). could someone outline and define the basic terminal commands for putting mpeg2enc in my usr/bin? i too have an iBook, i would go for a TiBook, but i don't have $4k to drop on a computer right now.

  11. I'm following (or trying) Squeed's instructions for making svcds with ffmpegx from *.vob . I've got mpeg2enc installed, put the presets as best I could, and clicked encode. It's using a background thread, so there are 2 terminal windows open. The active window is showing a (what looks like) a loop of the word 'skip'. looks like this:

    skip
    skip
    skip
    skip
    skip

you get the picture. is this normal? if not what should i do?
