    Hello everyone!

I'm a relative newbie onto DVD / VCD subject. I have LG combo DVD/CDRW mechanic, and i'm trying to rip DVD film onto VCD.

Would anyone advise, what are the best parameters to get the best possible quality so that the video fits on 2 CDs?

I'm asking because I managed to rip and encode DVD using DVDx 2.0 and since the burning program I use doesn't support VCD, I used other program to burn it onto CD (can't remember exactly which - i downloaded too much software but i believe it was VCD easy or VCD composer - anyway program using external commandline prg to burn VCDs).

Everything went fine but i'm not satisfied with the picture quality.

My first try of ripping DVD was using DVDx but encoding it to AVI with DIVX 5. This produced excellent results, though the picture was a bit "square" at moments, but good enough.

When I encoded to MPEG to burn onto VCD, the picture was too fuzzy, even though MPEG br was higher (1050) than DIVX (1000) Resolution is the same in both cases.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there a way to get better results?

I can ofcourse, continue using DIVX and burn AVIs onto a normal data CD, but then i'd have to use PC to view it. If I managed to burn decent quality VCD, I understand I could use VCDs in any standalone DVD player?

    Thanx for any help.

  2. Drop the DIVX format, it is very lossy. Convert to AVI uncompressed, Mjpeg or Huff. Stay far away from DIVX. The best is to rip directly to mpeg.

You may also want to look into using DVD2SVCD. If you player supports it SVCD will give a much sharper image and will usually fit on 2-3 disks/movie. VCD is inherintly limited.

I still find it better than VCD... picture is sharper and sound is louder... And I read @ several places that DivX is superior to VCD??

What parameters do you use to fit film onto 3 CDs? I read that SVCD carries only 35 minutes of film? Is it possible to set lower resolution or bitrate of video and/or audio? Does VBR on SVCD work only for audio or for video as well?
