  1. when encoding using tmpgenc i had a file that would not encode correctly. no i looked and found that someone said that if i went to options>environtmental settings>vfapi plug in and set the directshow multimedia file reader to a higher priority the file would encode... well it did! yay! but i noticed that the file itself was greatly reduced in size compared to a file i had just previously encoded that was part of the same series. does swapping the directshow yayaya media reader to a higher priority actually create smaller files when it encodes?!? or is this just my smokin crack or something?

Filesize is solely determined by bitrate. You didn't mention what encoding mode you used but I'm assuming you used a form of 1-pass vbr like CQ_VBR or CQ. In these modes the encoder allocates bitrate according to the complexity of the source, so the reason the size was different was because the encoder allocated more bitrate to one than the other.

Also if one of the encodes had a longer playtime than at the same bitrate it will be larger.

This setting, nor any other setting has a direct effect on filesize.
