    hi Guys

Iīve read a few weeks ago, about a Texas instruments chip that will allow a Standalone DVD player to read Divx (4 & 5). Of couse this chip will have to be implemented at the factory.

Does anyone knows more about this??? any developments??? anything new about this?

    Thanks

  2. I haven't heard anything about stand alone Divx players, but Toms Hardware has a review of an MPEG-4 (and thus Divx compatible) decoder card. Sounds pretty good in the description, but because the board is primarily designed to let older CPUs handle HQ divx with low CPU usage it won't really help encoding much.

It might be a good option if you want to take an old computer and make it into a Divx standalone box. The decoder card gives you remote control and tv out functionality, could be a fun toy.

Here's the link for the review.

  3. It would seem that DivX-capable standalone DVD players are on the way, based on the press release from Sigma Designs at http://www.sigmadesigns.com/news/press_releases/020626.htm . Sigma Designs already produces a single-chip DVD decoder capable of decoding DivX, MP3 and WMA (http://www.sigmadesigns.com/products/em8500.htm) - I think it is just a matter of time before we see this chip integrated in DVD players that can be bought at Circuit City or wherever.

There is one set-top DVD player that can play DIVX 4/5/etc. The Xbox. It ain't good for much else, but it can at least do that. Muy bueno. It doesn't hurt that its media compatibility list looks like that of an Apex box, either. Those of you who own DVD+RW drives might want to grab one, since it can play your output discs pretty much perfectly.

  6. Hey, I just read a news release regarding new licensing fees scheme for MPEG-4. Not sure how this scheme will affect release of set-top DivX players.

Under the plan, licensees would pay 25 cents each for MPEG-4 products such as decoders and encoders, with fees capped at $1 million a year for each licensee. It also suggests charging a per-minute rate, with no cap.

If You want a standalone DivX player get a sega dreamcast and the utility called DCDivX you can get here http://www.dcdivx.com. There is no modchip required either.

  9. If you're looking for something dependable that will play all of your Divx movies, stay the hell away from DCdivx. I wasted a lot of time reencoding from one divx version to another (because the player would only work with certain versions, like it would work with 4.1x, but not 4.4x, said some web sites, even though the program was officially billed as supporting everything but 5.x.) This was a couple months ago; it may be better now. I don't know. My Dreamcast died, so I can't test it. Also when I used it, it wouldn't support any disc with filenames longer than 8 letters, so that meant I had to rip and reburn (and perhaps reencode) my movies. Not very convenient.

To top it all off, I never got the damn thing to work. Not once, not ever, not with any version of Divx. I wasted 10 CDs trying. Unless they have radically changed this program, I'd recommend just waiting for a DVD player that can play them (or get an XBOX).

  12. Looks like it can't...yet. I'm not sure what mpb was thinking, but I took his word for it and added "(or get an XBOX)" to my post. From all the info I can find, the first and only version of a Divx player for XBOX is a very early beta release, which can play only video, not sound, from 3.11 videos. No 4/5.x support yet. And from what I've read, to get it working you either need a mod chip in your xbox or be able to use Linux with your XBox to boot the CD.

I also read that Enigmah (makers of the mod chip) are working on an XBox Media Player that'll play Divx content, plus VCD and MP3. Sounds promising.
