  1. OK.... There is a lot of material here about what is good and what is not. And also there is a lot of confusion. Interlaced, settings, and so on.

Here is what I am looking for.

I have Sony TRV-11 MiniDV camcorder. Video is transfered to PC via Pinnacle FireWire. Edited in Pinncle Studio 7. When I was trying to create SVCD dirrectly with Studio 7, final quality was very bad. So here is question.

How do I get best SVCD from Studio 7 ?

and... (since my DVD burner is ordered)

How do I get best DVD from Studio 7 ?

Basicly... what codec (in Studio 7 or outside) should I use and what setup? I believe there are differences based on source.

    So... Anybody knows ?

  2. I have used the same setup - I do't usually use the Studio7 encoder as the quality is bad. I render to Huffyuv or indeo with highest quality and then encode with TMPGenc. Author with most any program & looks good.

  3. Great ! What about TMPGenc setup ? Any sugestions ? Templates ?

And why Huffyuv OR indeo ? Any reason to pick one and not the other?

    Thanks.

  4. Pick a codec that gives you good quality - you can do a 30 sec DV capture & play with settings.

TMPGenc has different templates for SVCD & DVD standard (PAL or NTSC, I assume you're in the US so that would be NTSC). If the standard templates aren't quite right you can try any number of templates around this site or use the unlock template to play with settings yourself

  5. Instead of trying different templates, do you have any recomendations. Your favorites ? I just want to save some time.

  6. I aske this in my another "newbie" post, but do you know if TMPGEnc has its own codec or is it using existing external codec that is on my computer ?

Can this be reason why my output is not very good. Does it mean that TMPGEnc was using less good codec ? Or how is it really with TMPGEnc and codec's ?

  7. You can try the Canopus DV codec if TMPGenc refuses to accept your type 1 avi DV files. You don't need any other codec for DV. You must also select bottom field first in TMPGenc.

  8. But what are they using to creat MPEG2 ? Are they using some codec or they don't need any ? Not to read file or open or play. To create MPEG2.

  9. TMPGEnc creates the mpeg-2 file. You don't need anything else. However, the TMPGEnc demo's mpeg-2 support expires after 30 days. So you must pay 50$ to get the registered version.

See some of the newbie guides, for example, this guide:
