  1. Hello everybody.

    I currently own a P4 2.8 Ghz PC with 512 DDR Ram.

I am trying to write to my DVD Writer (Philips DVDRW228) but to date have had very little success with ALL software.

Everytime I try to write a DVD+R it crashes half way through giving write errors (Error from Nero)

I have tried almost every dvd writing package (VOB, Gear Pro, Nero) etc..

Gear - will not enable the write button to write content to the disk
    Nero - Crashes half way.
    VOB - Crashes half way.

Is this an XP Prof error ?.. Shall I Install Win 98 SE (Dual Boot the baby)

Would that be a better solution (I expect my pc is powerful enough)

    Thanks for any help.

  2. Why not just bite the bullit & use a stable operating system like win2k!! with service pack 3 on, I had nothing but habother using xp/home/pro/corprate versions so back to 2k it went!!

  3. Just out of interest what DVD writer do you own ?

What version of ASPI are you running and can you supply me a link.

I thought XP/2000 where simular OS wise ?

Maybe all the background services running in XP are messing up my writing ability.

Could you also let me know the Writing package you are running and version information.

    Thanks.

    Hi there!
First of all: don't blame Win XP pro OS for your inability to Burn a DVD.
I manage to burn something like 20 movies allready under this OS.
Not a single one ussing NERO. Vob also a pour Burning soft. I use Prassi primo DVD and B's Recorder Gold.
Dual boot will give nothing but grief.Trust me I've been there
Second: Win2K and Win Xp pro are almost one and the same If you ->
Right clik "My Computer"->"properties"->"Advanced"->"Performance" ->"Settings"->"visual Effects" and choose "Adjust for best performance".
Third: Did you consider that it might be the movie you are trying to burn.
Maybe something went wrong with your tampering(ansuported file format) or something. Try burning a Data DVD with files you want to backup from your hard drive and see
Also it would be a plus if you disable "Auto insert notification" for your DVD Burner.

    Good luck

  5. They are similar.

Perhaps it isn't an OS problem at all?

I agree Windows XP and 2000 are basically the same. XP is based off the NT/2K kernel. The big difference is greater Multi-Media Support, among other things.

Try another DVD Burning program… Like DVD Movie Factory…
You can download a trial copy of DVD Movie Factory from
    http://www.ulead.com/dmf/runme.htm
It’s about $45.00, so it won’t break the bank.

Other things you could check is your Virus Program. Have you disabled it b4 burning? If this works, you could exclude the directories that the burning program caches too.

Look to see what else you have running and disable all of them from startup. If it works, turn them back on one at a time till it breaks again. Then you will have found the app that may be causing it.

Hope this helps.. and Good Luck!

I wanna think that it's the device manager setting on your drive. I don't think it has to do with XP. Im running XP Pro and burning with no problems.
The only time i would get errors and crashes like your're explaining was when i first got my burner. For some reason i couldn't burn while in DMA/UDMA mode. As soon as i set my drive to PIO, i had no erros and was making back ups in no time. Now im running on a whole new system, and having no problems with UDMA mode? Hmmmm wierd?

Yea well, it sounds like that might be your problem. I was getting errors with all my burning programs: Primo DVD,Nero and even DVD Decrypter.

I dunno, i could be wrong, but give it a try. Good luck!

    Also:

Make sure the correct ASPI is installed. I was an early adopter of WinXP Pro and had all sorst of problems with my CD-burner until I forced an install of an older ASPI.

When I installed a new motherboard the other day, I had to reinstall the ASPI.

Also check the firmware on your burner. Maybe you're due for an upgrade.

  9. Don't discount the physical installation of the DVD drive as well. Some IDE devices don't play together very well.

Is the DVD recorder sharing the channel with another IDE device?

    Are they properly jumpered (master/slave)?

Are you using a high quality IDE cable?

Have you loaded the latest IDE driver for your chipset?
    Quote Quote
  10. My PC is brand spanking new (cables are of very high quality)

I am sharing with a CR-RW drive on the same IDE.

My DVDRW is the master and CD-RW the Slave.

I have installed so many different pieces of software on the PC in the last few days im re-building it now.

Gonna have another crack at XP.

Is there any requirements my installation should meet ?

Don't Mind me but does any of you ppl ever tried to change the default settings of the paging file in winXP pro.
Since you all use 2 or 3 HDD force the page file of the OS to a hard drive other than the one that the XP uses.
A....Also the Tmpgenc uses a Temporary folder try to keep it on another HDD than the one you use For cutting -joining and transform the movies.
Avoid the default location "Documents and settings->userX->....->Temp" there is a storage limit in that area
Maybe I'wrong but I need 5 to 5+1/2 hours for creatting an m2v file for a movie that is 130 minutes long at CQ_VBR - main profile & Main Level - motion search normal and a picture quality 50% with maxbitrate 6000 kbits\sec and Lower bitrate 5000 kbits\sec.

  16. Before you reload, try removing the CDRW from the picture. See if the DVD+R by itself behaves any differently. Also, definately try PIO mode, as UDMA mode seems to be a little flaky for some people.

  17. I would like to thank everyone for the above comments.

Ive finally resolved the problem (After a rebuild and a re-hink)

Im running XP Pro again and am writing DVD's happily with RecordNow MAX 4.10

It seems other pieces of software (Gear Pro, etc) are not very compatible with my DVD Writer (Philips DVDRW228), but found they noticedmy other DVD+RW Drive (RICOH **50A somthing!)

The problem I found was that they only recognised the Philips drive as a CDRW drive.

I think the problem is the ASPI layer some software uses to talk to devices are not 100% compatible with everything.

Windows XP is a great OS. Software support for the new version of ASPI under XP is rubbish.

But RecordNow MAX installed its own ASPI support and I had no need for Force ASPI or ASPI 4.6* at all.

Just a note about the Ricoh identification, currently every DVD+RW/+R drive for the PC is a Ricoh drive (mine says Rydata but it's still the same thing). Some brands don't change the internal firmware where the identification is to match their name, and some apps may just recognize them all as "Ricoh", but it really doesn't matter.
