  1. I have bought alot of 1x branded media meritline.com. It always showed up as 1x in Nero. After I upgraded my Dvr-104 to the 1.31 firmware it now shows up as 2x. This is strange because I thought the burn was permantly on disc? (by the way when i tried it at the 2x rhe die did'nt hold up).

I think burn speed is limited by Pioneer's judgement of the quality of the media. If they haven't approved it for 2x burning, the burner only shows that it can burn at 1x (I think this is stored in the firmware). Now, if they upgraded the status of this disc but it's still crap, the 2x option will appear but it may not be a good idea to use it as such.

  3. The pioneer firmware contains a table of manufacturer codes that can be written at 2x speed, with the 1.31 firmware pioneer added two new manufacturers as their discs have now been certified, unfortunately the older discs may not be as compatible and will fail at 2x.

You can now get a modified firmware that will allow all discs to be burned at 2x on a pioneer a03/a04, this is good for some discs that will work at 2x but haven't been through the pioneer certification.

Spooki: My understanding was that all attempts at a firmware to allow everything to burn at 2x failed because almost none of the media tested would work 2x if it wasn't rated. Its a specific kinda of disk, thats why 4x disk will only burn at 4 and 1x because 2x are special.

  5. The new 2x4all firmware still writes all the pioneer certified discs ok at 2x but gives you the option of trying 2x on any others you have, works on some but not others.

Ritek and DVD master discs will write fine at 2x but because they haven't gone through the pioneer certification which i think they have to pay for they are not included on the A03/A04 media table, i've installed the firmware and just stick to discs that are advertised as 2x and no problems so far

I've heard that the cheap vivastar media fail but they say 1x only anyway.

  6. Anyone know where a person could find the 2x-for-all firmware? TIA
