  1. I have a Dishnetwork receiver with pvr(displayer 501). I can store programs on the hard drive of the receiver to watch later. If I want to store these to dvd what is the best way to get the video into a computer and do this. Has anyone done this before? I appreciate any help in this matter.

    robertw477,

sorry, you've fallen pray to this PVR/Dish/Sat/Hardrive thing...

I'ts possible to do, BUT, is a REAL PAIN in the AZZ to do. You have to
    have:
    * LINUX OS,
    * be knowledgable in taking apart your PC
    * rank out your Hard drive (hd)
    * swap out the PVR hd
    * swap out your PC hd

Do this a few times, and you'll end up w/ your hd ribbon stretched and
fitagued and possible hd issue down the road. An experineced PC person
might go this route for one reason or another, but a beginner... I don't
know... do you wanna do this every day, for every TV program you wanna
    transfer to CD, etc. ??
Sorry, I don't have the links I've seen here or there, but someone else
may have them and post them here (just wait) and they will probably tell
    you it's easy. (like me)
Well, it was... sorta. . . It's easy to me. But, although I did do this for
a short time, I was not a LINUX person, and the machine I DID do this on
was not my own, as I was borrowing (at his house) just to see how the
PVR thing's quality compared to my capture card route. He told me it WAS
a pain in the AZZ to have to disconnect the ribbin and swap out HDs for
every TV program he wanted to burn. I only just tried a few, just to
compare agains my captures. And, of course, I felt that my captures were
better, but then again, what do I know. It was a fun experience, after
a failed attemp at MY TIVO purchase. he, he... I got electricuted when I
plugged in the unit. he, he... when I came to, I was watching my own
PVR versoin of TV programs, in the form of starts, he, he...
Well, it's not something I would recommend anyone - at least not a beginner

...can't see any easier way of doing this though.

Open up the Satellite receuver. Is the HD a standard IDE,40 pin connector,4-pin power plug, does it have a jumper to set to master or slave. If it does you can jumper it as the slave drive. The HD in your computer is jumpered as the master. You should be able install the Sat. HD in your computer and it will see it as the slave. Operaying system doesn't matter. This is no different than using a HD in Sampo DVD player.
