I looked around for a similar topic. If I missed something, feel free to just point me to something previously posted.

I have a Dish Network "DishDVR 625" running into my HP Media Center with SVideo and audio cables. I've had luck off and on with recording a program from the DVR to the Media Center DVR and then onto a DVD, but sometimes the Media Center picks up the copy protection flags so that I can't record them onto a DVD.

I don't know if it is a good thing or not, but the channel that Media center thinks I'm on is not the same as the channel that comes through the Dish. The channel that I choose on Media Center makes no difference, and the HP remote control has no effect on my Dish Net receiver. So, I previously thought that I may have had luck recording because the Media Center thought I was recording from PBS for example, when in fact I was recording a movie that I had recorded onto my Dish receiver. But, like I said, this doesn't always work, so I doubt this is the reason I was able to record. Also, the Media center may not have anything to do with the situation, and it is simply reading the flag embedded in the original program. For what it's worth, I don't think movies recorded on the Independant Movie channel are copy protected.

I simply want to record stuff on to the DVDs that I want to keep so I can free up space on my DVR. Any suggestions?

  2. Join this Yahoo Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PVRExplorer/

From the short welcome on the group page.
    "Description
Transfering Recorded programs from Dish Network Model PVR-501/508/510, DVR-522/625 Satellite DVR's to the PC.
Discussions of Piracy, Piracy Technologies and File Sharing are forbidden. "

It is for extracting the unencrypted programs from the hard drive of the model listed above thus it doesn't infringe on the DMCA.

Note that it will require you to remove the drive from the 625, Most likely voiding the warranty. And you must be sure not to allow Windows to initialize the drive. So stay out of Computer Management. You have to use the software from that group to extract. The drive will not show up in Windows as it loosely based on a Linux file format. The main advantage AFAIK of teh PVREXplorer is it will give description and titles of the video. And so on.

    Good Luck

  3. Another Alternative. Go HD with a VIP622/VIP722 and pay the $40 to allow storing things onto a external hard drives freeing up the DVRs drive.
