  1. Hello, been reading as much as i can from these great forums and trying everything possible, but still can not get audio to come into my capture using latest VirtualDub.
    My setup:
    P4 1.8, 512mb ram
    win2000 pro, SP2
    DirectX 8.1
    all drives NTFS (80+GB)
    ATI All-in-Wonder 128 pro
    Sound Blaster Live! Value
    JVC HRS7900 VCR w/ TBC

have s-video plugged into the purple ATI input cable and sound straight into sound card line-in input. also tried putting sound into purple input and then using other provided output cable to send audio from AIW to sound card via line in.
can get sound with ati capture software, but not with virtualdub. and can always hear the sound from the speakers.
read others posting about updating ATI software, so I did. wiped out all ATI drivers, software, registry entries. then installed in this order...
microsofts directx video capture update (even tho its supposed to be part of directx 8.1)
latest win2k driver for the AIW 128 Pro
    latest ATI capture driver
ATI 7.6 DVD player (needed before MMC, supposedly)
    ATI 7.7.0.1
    also installed the wrapper fix.

still no f#$%ing sound. noticed that it would pick up sound from my mic and then also from logitech quickcam mic. after unplugging them I get no sound whatsoever recorded.
I have my window's sound settings supposedly correct, line-in is checked as source and recording level is about 3/4.
have absolutely no idea what else to try. searched for an audio input selection in VirtDub, but could find nothing.

should I give up and get another video card? have been reading that lots of people have this problem, but haven't seen any solid fixes.

can also possibly pipe the a/v thru my sony TRV20 camcorder and then into the PC via firewire. will VirtDub recognize the input that way?

any help would truly be appreciated, have been messing around with this for a long time now. Have tons of DVD-R projects I'd like to get started.

sorry for the ramblings, hopefully the detail will help someone help me.
    take care, marc

  2. Marc,

Don't know if it helps but your problem sounds identical to mine and I fixed it by sleeping for one day.... Then I carefully checked all of my cable connections and then I swapped the audio cables on the back of my VCR. Swapped the white for the red. I tried to record in virtual dub and it worked.

Are you recording in mono or stereo and what Audio compression setting are you using? Also.... is the box labeled "capture audio" checked in capture mode under video in the settings screen?

Can you use windows sound recorder to record sound? I used that tool to test my setup. If it doesn't work there then your problem is not virtual dub.

    Good luck.....
    Mark...

  3. thank you for the reply and suggestions.
cables are definitely hooked up correctly (have tried every config possible), i believe the standard config for me would be rca-2-mini stereo from vcr to sound card line in. only other way i get sound (and only when running the ATI tv software) is to run audio to ati input cable and then run a line from the video card to the sound card line in.
I do have that box checked. i tried a few different compression settings, all the same result.
i will try that test with the windows recorder (or even cool edit) when i get home in a few hours. I was able to record audio with the video when using the ATI tv program, but that does not have all the fine tuning i'd like to use with virtual dub.
i'll post my findings, thanks again.
    any help is truly appreciated.

  4. philpom,
you were right. I tested a sound capture with windows recorder and had the same crappy results as with VirtDub (basically picking up audio via my mic on my quickcam). clicked around and found the audio properties (same as control panel>sounds and multimedia>audio tab) and set the "sound recording" to my soundcard/input device and that fixed everything, well at least as far as getting sound captured.
would think that checking the correct box in "Record Control" would set this for you, but obviously not.
    hope this helps others too.
    thanks again philpom
off to cause more damage and come back with more questions.
    take care, marc
