I'm a relative noob as well, but here are the things I did to get rid of jerkiness in my VCDs that I produced from DVDs.
1 - I changed CD-Rs. I was using Memorex and switched to the no name brand.
2 - I was using VCD Easy to burn my VCDs, but now only use VCDEasy to produce the bin/cue files and use Nero at the slowest speed (8X) to do the burn.
3 - I cleaned up my hard drives. I used some freewares to get rid of bad files and shortcuts and bad registry entries, etc. I deleted all the programs I wasn't using and removed as much as possible from my startup menus. Then I defragged and now defrag every couple of days.

I don't know what did the trick, because I did all the above at once. I think the change of CD-R media probably had the biggest effect (a lot of other people have posted problems with Memorex). But some have also reported problems with VCDEasy. I don't know how much the drive clean-up contributed, but my relatively slow PC now runs faster.

    Hope some of this helps.

  3. Jerkiness after conversion can happen from many things not only motion search.

    1. original avi source.
    2. Framerate of source file and the one you attempt to encode to.
    3. Bitrate if set too high or too low.
    4. Stand alone player (complatibility with XVCD, bitrate and framerate)
    5. media (not very often)
    6. burnning process (if burn and re-encoded with NERO)
    7. Speed of burnner (some claim it effect but for me I can burn at 24-32X without any glitch)

Check every steps you did, provide more details, search from older posts.

  4. my burner is fine. it only does it when i am trying to do Starwars during the fast motion seens. i have tried everything. i am going to lower my bitrate down and see if that helps.

  5. You most likely have the wrong frame rate.

  6. i kind of thought that myself. but when i bring the file up in vdub it says 23.9 and i set it to film. i made it a svcd instead of a vcd and used the header trick to get it to work with my dvd player and it looks a lot better and that is at 29 fps. i dont know if it was the fps or the svcd. can anyone tell me what they think

  7. you dont actually say bit I will assume you are using Tmpgenc to convert. One of the problems with TmpGenc is that when using VBR it can sometimes exceed the specified maximum bitrate for a few frames. In this case it could also exceed the maximum bitrate your player can handle when using CD's (as opposed to DVD). Try lowering the maximum bitrate and maybe average bitrate too, just by a couple of hundred kbytes to see if that helps. Unfortunatley this will reduce overall quality slightly but hopefully not enough to be noticeable!

NOTE. If the mpeg plays fine on your PC, from the HD, there is a good chance this is the problem.

Wait a second. Your original is in 23.976fps? If that's the case, I'm sure all that has to be done, is to run pulldown.exe, and your jerkiness should go away.

    Good luck!!!!!

pulldown.exe. i did the 3:2 pulldown once and it put black lines in it. i am using tmpgenc. i just switched to svcd and did the header trick for my dvd player and it looks great. i dont understand it though. i can do the same setting in vcd as i use in svcd and still get the jerking.

vcd doesnt use 3:2 pulldonw; unless your referring to the 3:2 filter.
    which i wouldnt recommend.

3:2 pulldown on playback is for mpeg2 and is needed for 23.97 fps.

i had jerkiness problems untill i put in the 3:2 pulldown.
now ill never make another vcd when svcd look almost like the dvd source

Yeah, you're right about SVCD. I used to know all the specs about VCD, but it got pushed out of my head because the SVCD stuff moved in. SVCD rocks. BTW, the header trick you refer to is something different. Look for a guide on the side ( try the CCE encoding guide). It mentions how to run pulldown.exe . It's a Dos run proggie, but I find in Win 2000, I just drop the .m2v file over the icon, and in a few minutes, presto, a file with the flags that tell the DVD player that it's a 29.97fps film, but it's really encoded at 23.976fps.

    Good luck!!!!!

ok now im really confused. i am new to this. i just made my first svcd with the header trick and it looks great. no jerking. but what is that u are talking about cce encoding guide, and do i need it if it runs fine. it is in 23.976 and i just change it in tmpgenc to 29.97fps and it runs great.
