  1. Hi,

First I want to say this is a great resource! I first started visiting this sight when I began shopping for a DVD player and also found great information regarding capture devices DV software etc.

    On to the point.....

I am trying to capture from VHS ( dirty dancing - it is for my wife and I figured it was a good tape to learn on ) to mpeg so I can burn a VCD. I can't get any audio or very little. I hear a HummMMmmMM and if I turn up the audio real loud I can here the sound from the movie.

I have an AverMedia studio capture card and I am using VirtualDub with composite connections.

I am pretty sure I have everything hooked up properly, I captured a super-VHS the other day with sound ( using virtual dub ) and also If I use the software that came with the card it works ( quality sucks ).

This must be simple but I have jacked with it to the point of frustration and could use a new perspective.

I have checked the volume levels for record and playback. I have my capture card looped into my 'line in' on the audio card so I choose line in as my record source correct? I haven't been able to locate a audio source selection in Virtual Dub.

Also... When I press play on the VCR I get video and audio to the virtual dub capture screen ( ie. I can see and hear everything. I just don't sound when I stop the capture and play my capture file in windows media player( except HmmMMmmMMMmmMM )

Any help would be appreciated... Perhaps I can offer some help on another topic another day to someone else.....

    Thanks,
    Mark...

Is Capture Audio checked in the Capture-->Settings window? Is Mono selected as an option in Audio Compression?

  3. OK, I figured it out.

On a sound card line in is a 1/8jack right. Now picture on some audio / video equipment when you are hooking up audio and it has one red rc jack and one white rc jack. Left and right audio. They are usually labeled something like --[L]--[R/mono]--

I am currently using a mono only VCR ( I didn't feel like unplugging the one in the living room - I am holding out for a loaner) It seems that some programs don't care if your audio source for mono is left channel or right channel but Virtual Dub will only function properly if the mono audio source is the left channel. ( at least on my system ).

My solution was to swap plugs on the back of the VCR red for white.

A moment away work wonders.... Thanks for the suggestion.
