I'm backing up DVD movies to DVD-r and DVD-RW, using the following steps:
    1. Rip with Smartripper (followed by DVD2AVI) or with CLAD
    2. TMPGenc, output to the largest file possible (adjust bitrate to fill the disk) to creat MPEG2
    3. SpruceUp to create Video_TS files
    4. Gear Pro DVD 6.0 to burn

The discs play without problems. BUT: I expected better picture quality than this from a DVD. In Monsters Inc or Shrek, I get pixellation or blockiness during sequences with rapid movement.
In 'film' movies (as opposed to digital movies), I get jaggies (jagged edges) during movement sequences. Any ideas/suggestions, or is this as good as it gets for now?
    My system:
    Abit Ic7G
    P4 3.0C @ 3.98 GHz
    2x512 MB DDR 500 ram
    WinXP Pro
    ATI Radeon X800pro
    5x120 GB Western Digital ata100
    TDK Velocd 48x16x44
    Sony 8x DVD burner

What is your MAX bitrate? Limitation in peax bitrate is ususally what causes pixelization in some scenes. Animated moveis are also harder on encoders ( I've spotted blocking on the shrek DVD ).

    Cheers

My bitrate is around 3000 K/s

I forget whether that filled the disk or not. I'll try re-encoding it at the max possible bitrate.

Blackhawk Down and Lord of The Rings were encoded at slightly lower bitrates, because they exceeded the Disk capacity (around 2800 k/s)

Ok, I think I see the problem here...

Use 2-pass set min to ~1500 and max ~7000 and set Average bitrate to the calculated bitrate to fit it on one disk. This will produce perfect output results that will never be blocky.

Using 2-pass with appropriate bitrates you might be able to fit 2 movies per disk. As long as the average bitrate is not too low.

    Thanks for the reply.

Now (I'm not at my home pc at the moment, so forgive the stupid question): where is the 2-pass set? Is it in TMPEGenc ?
