Hi All,
I have read quite often inside this forum that a 80 min CDR can hold 800MB and a 90min CDR can hold up to 900MB of Video. I am converting my DV AVI files into VCD or XVCD by using tmpgenc and burning with Nero. Recently I checked out a CDr 90 min media and actually it worked. But I am only able to store 800MB as mentioned on the media to it. What can I do to expand the capacity? I have the TEAC 54E drive and I checked the compatibility with CDR 90min and it should work. Any hint would be great.

You don't have to do anything! When writing tracks Mode 2, you simply get more available for data. (Mode 1 has some error protection scheme built in, that takes up valuable space,)
You're not "storing" the MPEG as such, but rather building a structure according to VCD specs when you create a VCD.
I'd recomment VCDEasy for authoring your VCD's - not Nero! No matter what you use for burning, remember to enable overburning, as 90 min CD's still report the same capacity as a 80 min.

Hi Mats,
thanks for your reply. I have burned already in Mode 2 but when I came close to 800MB, I got already a message"Not enough space on your media".
By the way at least in my version I had not the choice tos elect between Mode 1 & 2 . The option Mode 1 was disabled. Anyway I can try with VCDeasy as you recommended.

You have to be making a VCD or a SVCD with Nero (i.e., be loading the correct template/option).
A VCD/SVCD is not a CD-ROM and is not a data disc.
You won't get a choice for S/VCD between MODE1/2 because the format is dictated by the standard.
You can definitely fit about 796 MB of video data onto an 80min/700MB disc as a S/VCD. This is not doing anything unusual with your drive. When you are burning say 700 MB of files onto an 80min CD-ROM, you are in fact burning the same amount of data. The difference is that with a CD-ROM there is a lot more overhead (e.g., ECC) so you get LESS room for user data. There is less overhead on a S/VCD so you end up with more room for user data.
For those who are unconvinced, we all know that an 80min CD holds 80min of audio right? Try digitally extracting an 80min audio CD to WAV files on your HDD. What is the total size of the WAV files?

This q comes up so often, it ought to have its own explanation in the left menu. Maybe a new heading below WHAT IS and HOW TO: HOW COME where all FAQ are answered?
