  1. Hi There!!

I do have couple of questions.

Do you think DivX will replace DVD?

Here in India, electronic stuff is much expensive than US, so I am thinking bit hard; shall one wait till the DVD player with DivX support available in market?

    Thanks!!

No. DVD Video is a standard whereas DivX is a number of codecs that are implemented differently. A DivX will never match a good commercial DVD in picture quality, sound quality and on disc features. DVD's inherintly support switchable subtitles, custom menus and multiple video and audio angles.

The only possible competitior to DVD Video in the near future is Blu-Ray. If and when it appears it will undoubtedly extend the features currently available on DVD, not rewrite them.

I wouldn't. Whilst the hardware decoding chips are available AFAIK no manufacturers have commited themselves to making a DivX compatible player. You could be waiting a very long time.

  3. dusane,

while it is possible that some varient of MPEG-4 will be used
in the next generation HD DVD specs, you will be waiting
up to 2 years for the 1st standard models. Last time I heard
there were plenty of inexpensive DVD models and movies
available in India - you don't have to buy a Japanese/US brand!
