  1. Hello all,
I just wanted to let you all know that if, like me, you have a sort of cheapy Laptop/notebook computer without a DVD drive Tigerdirect.com is selling Archon miniDVD drives for $50. I know nothing about the brand but I can speak well for tigerdirect...and you can't beat the price.

  2. I really don't know much about the Archon brand, in fact I've never heard of it. That doesn't mean it won't work just fine for you though. What I would do is check the DVD ROM compatibility charts on this website and others and also go to Archon's website and see if you can find out who their major cutomers are, if you see any reputable names among these customers, it SHOULD be okay. Without knowing more about the brand or more information becoming available oin them, this is pretty much all you can do.

    Good luck,
    Prospero

Compatibility shouldn't be a problem, it's just a notebook-sized (thin) DVD-ROM drive. The name is misleading though, since around here "miniDVD" doesn't mean a small DVD drive

  4. And you may wish to check in advance whether this drive can be flashed and made region-free...

  5. With software players being what they are and cracks and DVD Genie abounding....I should have no trouble making the drive region free. I just think it is funny that people spend close to a $1000 for a portable DVD player when they can buy a cheap lap top and this little drive and get a much better monitor and a computer! Also something to lookinto for those worried about Macrosvision and regionfreeness (I just made that word up!) should look into a little program called DVDidle. It smooths playback, makes the stream macrovision free and removes region codes...nice eh?
