How Long Does IT Take To Covert Using TMPGEnc

Not bragging but damm, it takes like 25 minutes for me.
I upgraded my P.C from a Pen 2 400mhz(which took 2 and half hours to convert) to an Athlon XP2100XP, which cost up to £900 for the whole P.c, but damm is it worth it.

It totally depends on lentgh, type of movie, frame size, filters, original format(DVD or Captured Avi), conversion method(CQ_VBR, 2 pass VBR, etc) etc.

If I do a 50 min captured clip in a 2-pass it takes about 100 min when resizeing and encoding to CVD(mpeg-2) on my 1600 XP when using TMPGenc for everything.

the movies are using an average of 125mb,, and they are capture avi files which i'm coverting to mpeg.

@cdtplug, i meant £900 for the whole system, not only the chip(lol), that included a 80gb hard drive, 512mb, e.t.c.

it takes me about 4hours to convert a 700mb divx movie backup to a dvd mpeg2. i have a xp2000 chip and 100gig harddrive pc. i built this myself and with a dvd burner came to £700

set your cache setting on tmpg.It will speed up your 2 pass VBR.
options>enviromental settings>CPU>cache settings
When you are a lucky bastard and have a dual Pentium,you should turn on the :use multithread button.
Ore you could use cce,4 times faster....

I was going to ask this very question. But I don't think the "standard" has been set. How about 1 hour of AVI converted to 1] VCD and 2] SVCD. Assume using all the default settings in TMPG. Please post your computer details as I plan an upgrade soon and want to know what I'm looking for.

Me: VCD = 1 hour AVI takes about 8-10 hours
SVCD= afraid to try

I have a 1.0 ghz Pentium 3 256 mb RAM with a 32MB Video card on a Inspiron 4100.


It took me 9 hours to encode Star Wars Empire strikes back

and the audio went off sync

I've just about given up on everything.


what am I doing wrong

The audio also gos off synce even when doing 22 minute episodes of Family Guy

I'm beggining to hate this stuff, and I already own a pioneer 104, and a bunch of other stuff

Your ADS Instant USB seems to get a bad rap as most other USB sevices too. USB was designed with low speed periferals in mind (keyboard, mouse, etc). BUT, I know there's folks here that have had success with it (assuing that device is what is causing you issues). Maybe you could pick up a cheap tv tuner and see what it does. Your computer is FAR superior to mine, so there no doubt in my mind your computer is capable.

nope I've only converted one actual capture for dvd. The rest is just downloads that I want on dvd.

I've had good luck with my Instant USB. But I know people give it alot of shit. For me though its great for having a labtop

How long is a piece of string? The conversion time depends on so many things besides the power of your PC, which is of course very important. For example, converting from DivX is much faster than converting from DVD. Other factors that can affect the speed are tweaking the environmental settings, choosing different motion search precision, and using the various filters. The latter can dramatically increase encoding times.
