  2. well there are several ways to do it, unfortunately I've never tried it therefore my knowledge of the matter doesn't go very far. U can do it by serial link or network card. U can find info about it in www.secureroot.com if u can't find it in the txt files go to their forum, those guys work on networks for a living and can surely help you out better

Thatys not what I mean, I mean use 2 modems connected by a phone line to play games. This means cost affectiveness. I have made hgreat strides lately and have only one problem and that generating a ring tone to make the host modem pick up.

If anybody knows how plz post here.

Back in my day we called it a null modem setup... and I'm not sure if the newfangled Window based modems can do it but if ya look it up I'm sure there is info out there...

Really though why? 2 network cards = 30 bucks at the right store. Cable? almost free at some...

and many, many, many times faster. My local PC shop has 10/100 PCI ethernet cards for 9 US bucks per card, and you can probably find them for as little a 5 bucks per (or even free after rebate) if you look hard enough. Another 10 bucks for a 25 foot crossover cable (so you don't need a hub) and you're off to set up your home LAN.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  6. You'll find that the speed of your modems will let you down when playing a linked game between them, I tried connecting 2 pc's together by there modems and the game kept crashing or going out of sync because the 2 modems couldn't keep up with the game speed.

Some games give you an option of connecting with modems in which case all you do is type your friends phone number into the "number to dial field" and SELECT THE RIGHT COM PORT for them to connect with.

But the games will run a lot better if you get network cards and a crossover cable

  9. As above -- I strongly suggest you invest in ethernet.

However, if both PCs have parallel ports, just get a "laplink" parallel cable or a null modem serial cable (if both PCs have a spare serial port).

You can then use Windows to connect the two PC (with full windows networking -- i.e., TCP/IP, file sharing, etc.) with Direct cable connection. Search for this term in help and you'll find more info. I don't believe that it comes installed as default so you may need your Windows CDs handy.

I remember doing this AGES ago before I had NICs on my PCs with the parallel cable. It is pretty damn slow for file transfers (still way better than serial cable though) but more than okay for most games.

I won't be connecting the 2 computers together anymore sadly. However it is only games I would have been doing.

Thanks for the input, I will probably be using a modem2modem setup somewhere in the far future.

  11. I used a guide for hooking up my dreamcast modem to a pc modem found at:
    http://home.elp.rr.com/terlouw/DCWinMEServer.htm
Anyway it has some links to useful programs to use if you're are just using a phone cord straight from modem to modem. It would be much easier to just use the regular phone line. unplug it from your phone and into your modem, tell your friend to do likewise. dial his phone number. He needs to have the proper software setup to pick up the incoming call. Check out the above link. It really does have helpful info even if what you're doing has nothing to do with a dreamcast. But since, I guess you're not going to do it anymore, you might not care anymore. I just thought you might like to know for future knowledge.
    Peace out
