  1. Hi. I am buiding a computer especially for encoding video. I want to know if a single Pentium 4 2.63GHz will do the work faster than dual Athlon MP 2200+ ? I use TMPGEnc with filters (resizing, noise reduction, etc.)

  2. hello
    i have 2 machine
    p4 1.8 512mb , 1 cpu
    p3 1.4mhz 512 mb , dual cpu

    the p4 is much faster
i think that as much as higher mhz cpu ... higher output !
but it is only if it only encode .... not to encode and work in the same time

  3. Lawsuit

As we have reported recently, a group of Pentium 4 owners has lodged a class action lawsuit against Intel. This group of disgruntled Intel customers charge the chipmaker with misrepresenting the true performance of the Pentium 4 in comparison with the Pentium III and Athlon processors.

AMD's discoveries covered here offer potent ammunition for conviction since the data bluntly shows that Intel's actions to mislead customers were calculated and deliberate.

To gain credibility for its covertly developed marketing tools, Intel created BAPCo as a front organization to distribute SysMark as an independently derived benchmark suite. However, Intel itself produced the tests, while safely shielding itself from suspicion (other than ours) behind BAPCo.

We write many of our own tools. As we have reported often before, it is actually very difficult to construct a set of balanced benchmarks that favor the Pentium 4 over the Athlon XP.

AMD's evidence shows clearly that after setting up BAPCo Intel then went far, far out of the way to skew SysMark -- perhaps the most widely used benchmark suite today -- to favor the Pentium 4 over competing CPU architectures.

    Hmmm

Winstone, 3ds Max, and Lightwave all show the P4 kicking AMD butt. Are those companies owned by Intel also?

    A 2.0GHz P4 renders 3d faster than a AMD XP 2600 + (72s to 94.4s).

its true, every benchmark I have read has said that the gap between the two competing processors is growing, with the P4 in the lead. However, with the cost benefits of an AMD system, I still prefer the XP.

    No doubt!

I have 2 P4's (2000 512k cache rambus, 1500 256k cache rambus) for video only, I just built two AMD XP 2000 for the price of one P4.

In everyday use (Office, web, moderate gaming) I "feel" no difference between the XP's and my P4 2000.

In video production though, the XP's are about equal to my P4 1500.

    On a budget=XP, no holds barred=P4.

Just wish I could justify the price of dual P4 Xeons 8)

  8. Disturbed is not so disturbed I agree - P4 if you have the bucks for a fast one (1.8GHz or higher). Dual Xeons if you are the red headed cousin's brother of Bill Gates.

I don't know if it's been done lately, or even at all, but I would very much be interested in participating in a group test of systems. If someone, maybe this site, could make available a sizable file to download and let everyone render it maybe 5 different ways, different formats, filters on and off, etc., and then post their results. Not only am I curious how fast the other types of systems are, I'm also curious how closely I compare with systems that have the same hardware I have. I put together my dual Athlon 1600 back in November and added a few things to it since, but I'm sure I don't have it optimized. Does anybody care to make this happen? Is a single P4 faster than a dual Athlon using programs that take advantage of dual processing? If so, by how much? A large feedback of data from a test like that would help many of us decide what kind of hardware to purchase to best match up with the price/performance ratio.
    That's my two bits.

  11. Van's Hardware is hardly known for being impartial...

I strongly suggest other review sites.

The P4 2.8 GHz is definitely the fastest CPU at the moment. However, the Athlon still compares much more favourably on the price/performance ratio.

  12. This review is for a single processor motherboard but it is worth reading:
