  1. I'm looking for a capture card that can do MPEG-1 and, if its not too much more expensive, MPEG-2 also. I would like to capture DVDs in both of these formats and I'm looking for the best capture card that I can afford now. I read the section on capture cards, but couldnt find one that could do MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 for under $100.00. I did, however, see a few that could do MPEG-1 for less than $50.00. 8) Is lack of MPEG-2 capability worth compromising to save more than $50.00? Any info would help. Thanks.

My Win TV Go card cost me $50.00 and the Hauppauge web site has a full version of NanoDVR. It captures in MPEG for you.
    Hello.

  3. If you have a fast PC which memory and hard drive are acceptable, you could go with quite an array of "inexpensive cards" on the market. Options such as WinTV / PVR (from what I understand, don't have one) which have onboard hardware MPEG encoders (especially those with USB connections) may be great for MPEG caps, but less suitable for the advanced user who wants to go to AVI.

That said, with a fast machine, software encoding has come a long way, and $39 for the I/O Magic capture package (includes a pinnacle cap card and PowerVCR II Real-time mpeg encoder) is a lot of bang for the buck!

I personally prefer my ATI AIW card, but I am into pain!

Anyone have a link or know where to get I/O Magic package?

  5. Thanks for the link tjdmobile,I wonder if it has composite/s-video in.
The PowerVCRII software alone is worth $49.

  6. The card has Composite and S-video in. Bottom line - it's actually a pretty decent card, it is just a bit lower in quality than my ATI card. It (with my tests) did keep up just fine capturing 30 fps. I only tested it at 352x240. I am not entirely sure that it works at any higher resolution.

    Yes, the software is great!
