Well, I've been monkeying around with my A-04 and a DVD-RW, and a GE505N (new GE 5-disc DVD)
After reading all sorts of poop on "authoring" dvd's and converting SVCD to DVD via "spoofing" etc., I'd thought I'd try someting silly.
Simply create an ISO/UDF DVD-ROM with a "raw" VOB and/or a SVCD mpeg file, hell, just drop on whatever you think might work!
Pop it into your player (hopefully one of the Shinco models), and you -should- get a directory listing (like the MP3 interface). Simply pick the file in question and hit "play"!
Bingo, it plays perfectly!
The only caveat is that the idiotic player thinks that you are playing an audio file, and the screensaver kicks in after about 2 minutes! Hitting "menu" brings back the picture, but that's a bit annoying! Perhaps other players aren't so dumb?
Give it a try!

It should be noted that this is a player-specific feature.

Well, it's not that rare...
Most of the Shinco OEM's (GE, Apex, etc.) will do this, and probably many others. If your player has MP3 capability, there's a reasonably good chance it'll work. (you are looking for the ability for the player to "read" the directory structure of a ISO/UDF disk, and allow playback of "tracks")
Generally speaking, most of us could really care less about "absolute" compatability, all we're after is disks that play in our players!
(please read the following, it's critical)
It's sort-of a no-brainer, since -none- of the data integrity is lost whatsoever (you are literally "copying" compliant VOB/SVCD/VCD MPEG files onto the UDF DVD-R/RW). (Yes, you can mix VOB/SVCD/VCD on the same disk, no problems)
If, for some reason, you want to make a "compliant" disk, simply copy the files off the DVD-R/RW in question, and author as per normal.
Here's a way to archive your footage and have it in a useable manner at your fingertips! What could be more simple? -
As per my previous comments.
If it were so simple as simply putting some files on a disc, this forum wouldn't exist...
Thanks for reminding us of the simpler ways of doing things anyway.
