  1. Hi All

Bought Panasonic DMRES35V about 4 years ago and it always worked fine.
Now I have a jammed tape and no other functions worked. Would not even shut down.
I unplugged it to reinitialize hoping stuck VHS tape would eject.
Plugged power cord back in and machine is totally dead...NOTHING.
Panasonic tech support tells me that it could be a dead power supply.
    Any suggestions please?
Where would I find a replacement power supply for this Panasonic model if I confirm that this is the problem?
    Thanks

  2. You could buy one on ebay to repair yours, then it's a simple matter to swap boards. There are 2 good candidates available now. First thing, you need to unplug it, then open it and verify that the power supply is on a separate board. Only buy another unit for parts, if it's modular, separate boards for power and DVD/VCR. This could be more expensive than replacing components and not every parts will be useful.

While you're there check if it's not just a blown fuse and look for other components that might have blown. Look at the capacitors, any of them have a bulging top? It's not uncommon for diodes and resistors to blow, especially on the high voltage side. Capacitors might go bad if they're of poor quality or when something else blows. Components are cheap and easy to replace, just watch the markings and keep the orientation the same. If you can't do it yourself, at least if you take it to a shop you can price the parts first and know if you're being taken.

  3. Thanks
I'm kind of new at this so I'm at a loss understanding your reference about using eBay and "2 good candidates available now". I searched eBay but I can't find anything. Hate to ask for spoon feeding and internet 101 but a hint would be great to help me search out eBay and find your reference. I would rather not buy another full deck for parts not knowing if the parts are usable and not blown also. I don't have the skills to test parts for integrity. Panasonic will fix or replace the deck for $140.00 + S&H. I can probably buy a new one for $200.
I was hoping to just track a replacement power supply but my field is PC repair and my vision of a blown power supply is an enclosed box component and not on a board. Sorry for my ignorance and thanks for your attention. The least I can do is open it up, try to release the jammed tape, follow your lead (thanks) and check for blown fuses, caps etc.

  4. Look here:

You're in luck, there's a power supply available for $25. Also look for the one with #9163, top pick. #6934 would be second choice. And this one would be great if you can catch it in time:

  5. Look at the VCR drive mechanism, usually you can figure out which gear to turn to actuate it. Then you'll be able to get the tape out without damaging it. Swapping the power supply is pretty much the same thing, but no box. As for repairing, it's not that hard check this out, it'll give you an idea:

Only time it gets hard to fix is when an IC goes and it doesn't show. Many times blown components are just that, blown to pieces. Even if you swap boards, you should still try to fix the old one. Chances are you're going to need it someday. And plug the recorder on a good quality surge protector, try to get one that can take as many Joules as you can afford and that protects all 3 lines.
