    how do i determine what the proper source aspect ratio of my files are (dvd rip, vob files)

    It just depends on what aspect ratio the movie is.

    just look at how big the black bars are or check the back of the dvd case.

    Smartripper or DVD2AVI can tell you information about the source aspect ratio of DVD rips.
