Aspect ratio question

Hi,

I am sure this is a stupid question, but here goes...

I want to use iMovie/iDVD ('08) to create a video with a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9), but the footage was shot with a 4:3 aspect ratio. So I set the aspect ratio in project properties to the widescreen option. However, after burning the DVD and playing on a TV the shot is full screen. Also, if I choose a "widescreen" menu in iDVD part of that menu is chopped when played on TV. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help!

if the footage is 4:3, why do you want to display it as 16:9?

(I suppose on a 4:3 tv?)
use mydvdedit (double-click on an .IFO files to open it):
- select your VTS (top/left) = your video (eg: "VTS 1")
- (middle /center) you'll find 3 vertical "buttons" (I don't know the english word). Last is "DVD", middle is "VTS x". Click on "VTS x"
- select the display(you certainly want an "16:9 auto Panscan & Letterbox" = widescreen)

so iDVD tagged your video as "16:9 auto Panscan & Letterbox"
I don't understand your problem, you wanted Letterbox only? If so, just check the settings of your DVDPlayer ("16:9 auto Panscan & Letterbox" displays as Letterbox OR PanScan depending on the user settings - aka the DVDPlayer settings)

You can crop in but unless you shot loose you will be chopping heads and reducing quality.

PS: I'm not sure my answer was the good one.
If your shoots were 4:3, you will just deform the display, your tv is a 4:3 format or not? (you didn't provide enough informations...)
