Do you have a firewire bus in your laptop?

If you have a firewire bus, get a dazzle dv bridge or a dv camcorder with analog in-dv out or some other sort of analog-digital device.

If you dont have a firewire bus, add one through PCMCIA.

USB is not the way to go, it just doesn't have enough bandwith.

Usb has like 12, with 4 megs devoted to the system

    Firewire has 400megs.

  4. As far as USB bandwidth, sure, it's too slow for DV. But these devices are outboard hardware mpeg encoders. They should be perfectly happy on 3-4mbps of bandwidth capturing DVD ready mpeg-2 streams.

I've seen the ADS box in action, and it looked pretty good. I didn't get to do any extensive testing on it though. I haven't seen the dazzle device so I can't compare. I still haven't forgiven Dazzle for the original USB Digital Video Creator, so I'll probably never touch another dazzle product in this lifetime.

  5. What are you going to do with the video you capture?

Are you going to capture video and burn it directly to a VCD, SVCD or DVD? If so, then the ADS will work, or any other USB capture device with a hardware mpeg encoder.

But, are you going to edit the video, add titles or effects, then you need to capture AVI video. The USB port will not work for this unless you want to use very low quality 320x240 video. DV capture via a firewire port is possible, but you need some real horse power to capture and de/recompress DV video. Also, the DV video capture devices are expensive, like $300. The Dazzle is your best bet here.

If you have a low or medium powered laptop, I would go with the hardware mpeg encoder via the USB port.

  7. Get a USB device with a hardware encoder. The authoring software will allow you to add menus before you burn your video.
