Having just ripped LOTR to my hdd, I've taken out what I thought was necessary in IfoEdit, but the remaining vobs still come out at around 6 gigs. What is the best option now that I have theses vobs of this size,??
1) Convert to 2 discs in ifoedit,
2)Encode the vobs I have, if so, how and what encoder to use??
3) Re-rip with Smartripper, produce an m2v and ac3 file and encode with Rempeg, without the menus and author in Spruce up.
Your advice and experiences with this film to dvdr much appreciated
Thanks
Raider.

I backed up my copy like this:
SmartRipper the movie VOBs to my hard drive
DVD2AVI -makes a .d2v and a .wav
TMPGnc - muxed the files from DVD2AVI into a MPEG2 (3.92GB)
Used spruceUp to author my DVD
Nero to burn the bugger -
You should be able to retain the original menu's and not have to re-author the whole disc if you use IfoEdit and transcode with ReMpeg, I think Doom 9 has a guide how to do it, just set the sample rate low enough to encode the whole movie.

What i did was i ripped movie lord of the rings then using smart ripper then .... I ripped out all the menus leaving only the movie as if i were making a dvd-r without menus. After that I split the movies using the 2 dvd method by doom.

thanks ppl,
going to go for the option of editing in Ifoedit, and then encode with ReMpeg.
cheers for the replies

ReMpeg settings I used:
avg bitrate: 2910 k/sec
(this makes it VBR)check limit bitrate: 4690

Ripped with Smart Ripper... Split over DVD-R's with ifoedit. No problems.

yep, gotta be honest, couldn't be bothered to wait for ReMpeg, so split to two dvd-r's with Ifoedit, and works a treat
thanks for your input ppl
cheers

just fyi, this release of LoR was missing footage seen in the movie theatres. They plan on releasing a 4-box set in November. It was just a marketing ploy.

Offical statement from the director is that it will have 30 minutes of cut footage from what was seen in the theater, I won't buy this 2 disc set either, like I got duped with Pearl Harbor, I can wait until november, my DVD rip will be good enough until then.

Once you've got the vobs, and taken out what you want in Ifoedit, is there a way of getting the resulting vobs into CCE, encoding and then putting back into Ifoedit???
Thanks

Use the split, you will save a lot of time, and franky, that movie is worth the purchase of DVD-R (But not as i said previously, the 50 USD they are trying to charge us for it in a certain place in south America. I have in preorder the 5-disc version, this is why i not order it from the us)

if u are using REMPEG to re encode dvd that means u must not have CCE or u just dont know how to use it.
i used rempeg for the awhile until i got the hang of CCE
CCE WILL GIVE U BETTER RESULTS and its a tested fact its faster!!!
yo Fand check out this post on doom's forum, dvd encoding section:

follow that advanced cce (robshot method) guide:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/cce-advanced.htm
ok when u have your movie vobs follow the guide to split the audio/video
to get your d2v and audio files set up your d2v file with avisynth or VFAPi as described in the guide. now u will be able to load it up into CCE ..
since u are new to the cce method i would suggest u configure CCE up until the GOP setting (dont go past the GOP settings) but make sure to set it to do a multipass of 2 (or more if u want) and set your min, max and avg bitrates.
after encoding just author your new video and audio back together...but u cant remux it back with ifoedit...bummer..yea i know
leaving out everything after the GOP process of the guide isnt that critical but will increase quality if the whole guide is followed.....i just recommend u leave it out until u get the hang of CCE dvd compliant encoding before u attack the robshot method.
thats just my opinion.......

@eatin sammiches for lunch
thanx m8, I will give it a whirl, can I still keep the title screens, where you choose subtitles, languages etc...., or will I lose them and have to author with something else???
I'd really like to keep the dvd as original as possible, thats why I like the ifoedit option,
and I still don't understand how FAND gets ReMpeg down to 5 hours, please advise m8,
thanks

I just used smart ripper to rip half of the chapters into m2v and ac3. Then I used DVD Maestro to build vobs. Finally, I burned with nero. Then repeated for the second half of the chapters. Yes it takes to dvds but it avoids all the re-encoding and the bitrate stays the same.
