I've tried ripping two DVD's so far: The Matrix and The Game. Each time Smart Ripper and DVD Decrypter rips them at .5x while my DVDROM is a 16x drive. At that rate it says it would take 30 hours to rip the DVD. Also, every timer I try to rip a DVD both Smart Ripper and DVD Decrypter can never unlock one .vob file, it happens everytime, is that suppose to happen? Here are some specs about my system:
1.1 Ghz Athlon
512 RAM
Windows 2000
ASAPI Layer installed since Windows 2000 doesn't have any.
16x DVD drive
One more thing.. my HD is FAT32 so is it possible for me to have a 4GB+ file? I thought such a thing is not possible on FAT32, or is it possible with Windows 2000?

I don't know how I would enable DMA, my computer is a Compaq and they do limit the amount of stuff you can turn on for your hardware. Where would I go about to enable it, and I will try playing the DVD for a few mins and then rip it.

Go into device manager, look under either disk or IDE channel properties.
May the force be with you. -
Ok,
I found it and it's already enabled. Well it says Transfer Mode: "DMA if available." -
you dvd is just too scratchy, I have clean dvd hat rips at 12x and other at 0.1x, if they are too scratched
-
If your DVD is really scratched up, then clean it with some window cleaner and a soft cloth, then take some paste wax
(I use Trewax, but Johnson's also will work) and polish the sucker up! This will fix a majority of these scratch issues. -

max file size limite under fat32 is 4gb, so you can rip n/p as the vob files will be 1gb each, however if you re encode back to mpg2 and you'll hit the 4 gb limit, unless you convert to ntfs. Then you can go bigger n/p. However no movie should be over 4.3gb if you re encode the streams and you use a decent bitrate ( 4500 to 5100 is what I use ). -
Hi,
I have noticed that several people have had a similar problem and they have Windows 2000 installed. I used to have Win Millenium and Smartripper ripped at rates of 6x. Once I installed 2000 it started to rip at 1x speed. I tried all the solutions people came up with on the forums and nothing worked. I am now switching over to XP to see if that works. -
It could also be the kind of DVD drive. I have a Toshiba 16X and it is a f&*^&*^*ing nightmare. Now it doesn't take 30 hours...but it does take approximently the length of the movie to rip.....and you CAN'T enable DMA with this particular drive.....

I switched over to Xp from 2000 and I am ripping at speeds of 4x to 6x (depending on the dvd) good luck !

I realize that people post when they have problems but the sheer volume of problems I see about Windows XP and now Windows 2000 would lead me to say switch back to Windows 98 first edition. I use it and Smartripper extracts the average movie in 5-7 minutes. Bill Gates is rich enough don't spend money on new operating systems that seem to offer no real world improvements, for the average user, and that's us and lot's of problems.

There is nothing wrong with Win2k ripping speed. The problem with Win2k is by default, it uses PIO mode on CD ROMs and DvD. Simply select the IDE channel it's on, and change it to DMA. Note that the setting for Win2k is under the IDE properties, not the drive as with Win9x. Mine was ripping at 1.0x until I enabled DMA, and now I'm getting 4-6x ripping speed. It also helps to install ASPI drivers, as Win2k does not include these either.

i agree, my dvd-rips go at about 2.2x and it is done in about a half-hour. I use win2k.

I use Win XP Pro on a Pentium 4 1.8 G and can rip a DVD in about 15-20 minutes.
I use Smartripper 2.41 and it works great on a Pioneer 16X dvd drive.
I usually have to start playing the movie in my ATI DVD player to unlock the files, and then hit stop and then leave the application open. After that Smartripper works no problem. -
Another thing to check:
if you're using Smartripper, does anything show up under "unencripted blocks"?
I once had your problem (for only one disc) and numbers were showing up there. I put the disc in another drive and it ripped w/o problems.I don't have a bad attitude...
Life has a bad attitude! -
I tried all those solutions with the dma, increasing system resources, and installing aspi, but to no avail. My rip speed did not increase for any of these things. It wasn't until i changed os's that anything happened. This might not be the solution for others but for me it worked fine.
