I need to convert some MPEG2 to AVI so I can edit it with VirtualDib. What is the best software to do this.

    My parameters:

    Ease of use,

zero quality degredation, (straight copy, no-recompress)

and I want to use the output avis from Vdub to re-encode with TMPEGEnc.

I tried to use the output function in TMPEGEnc to do this (output to avi) but I got a wierd messed up clip where the video clip was split into 4 quarters and the audio was messed. If I could resolve this issue I would love to just use TMPEGEnc.

    (straight copy, no-recompress)

How are you going to do that then ? Considering the compression of an AVI is nothing like the compression of an mpeg.

recompress !, then the MPEG 2 would be uncompressed and saved to an AVI uncompressed, no re-compress

Why can't you edit them in TMPGEnc ?

I want to take bits and pieces out, so I wanted to use something like VDub. Is there a function in TMPGEnc that I am not familiar with where you can make multiple cuts at a time like with VDub?

Before you did the encoding you could have cut out sections just like Vdub, but now you have the mpeg the only way you can do this is with Merge & cut, saving out different parts leaving the ones you don’t want, then use the same function to join them all back together.

By the way, have you used
File > output to file > AVI TMPGEnc can convert to AVI also

DVD2AVI would probably work for this, it supports not only DVD source, but any MPEG-2 video --> uncompressed AVI.

thanks guys, I think I was being dumb. I am going to capture in 15Mbps MPEG1, which VirtualDub will open, then output to divx avi, then re-encode to mpeg2 with tmpgenc. For what I am using this for, there is no perceptible loss.

One annoying thing: when I used dvd2avi AND tmpgenc, both output to avi fine but no audio, and I could not fix this issue!

Also, I tried to capture straight to .avi, but found that during high motion, I got wierd lines on the leading and trailing edge of moving objects in my video, which does not occur with mpeg capture. Anyone know what this is?
