  1. Hi, I'm trying to convert a divx avi file to vcd mpg file. I extracted the avi audio with VirtualDub because it got out of sync if I didn't, I saved it to wav, now when I encode it, it works great, it's in-sync and seaking is fast, except for that 30 min into the movie it just stop encoding the video portion, the audio is still there, but no video. I'm encoding this with TMPEnc and it's 23.976 fps. Thanks a lot.

P.S. is there anyway to get VirtualDub to fix the MPEG-3 syncing problem without converting it to wav? because you seem to loose some quality in the conversion, thanks.

Scan for junk frames in Vdub, save out another copy using video/audio streaming, then use that.

TMPGENC might not need the audio separate, it handles MP3 just fine.

  3. Thanks for the tip, I'm scanning right now, as for the audio, I know it works, but the audio's out of sync, quite badly actually. Maybe I should clarify, it's "Fraunhofer-IIS MPEG Audio Layer 3", and several places on this site said to convert to wav, but it lowers the sound quality (I can hear some odd buzzing noises occasionally, not loud though), so I was wondering if I could somehow just get VirtualDub to fix the syncronization without re-compresion, just wondering, thanks.

  4. Um, also, I just got done scanning it for errors, what do I do now? all it shows is a green and black screen (a bad frame?). Thanks.

After the scan (If there was no scan crash) it makes a list at the bottom of its screen (if it has found any), even a single frame can cause a problem.

Then you save out another copy using streaming, Vdub will save without the bad frames.

    Video > Direct stream copy
    Audio > Direct stream copy
    SAVE AVI

Also "vdub-mp3-freeze.exe" can make a list of bad frames at c:\badframe.log

When there is no bad frames, your ready to move on, any attempt to fix other problems while there are bad frames, only makes matters worse.

The audio in the AVI is a MP3 DivX audio, so I guess the AVI is DivX 3.11 Alpha, a very good codec.

TMPGEnc will convert any AVI that has no problems, no need to save this type of audio out BUT !

With uncompressed audio, there is more chance it will not give lip sync problems, if the AVI has a glitch.

    Audio > Full processing mode
    Audio > Conversion > 44.1Khz
    SAVE WAV

Perhaps after the scan and the save, your AVI will be OK ??

At least you can load the new AVI and continue with Vdub, you can also select a audio skew +/- both in Vdub and TMPGEnc, if the sync is the same all the way through the movie.

But for now save out another copy and see how it goes

  6. Thanks for all the info, but unfortunately when I load my new error corrected avi in TMPEnc it says it can't load it, it may be unsorported....and when I error corrected it at the bottom of the VirtualDub screen was "0 frames masked (0 frames bad, 0 frames good but undecodable)", so I guess there weren't any errors? But it introduced a green and black keyframe at the begining or something, because for a few second the screen has a lot of green and black blurs. I'm not quite sure what to try now....but thanks for anymore help.

Bring it round let me do it, its quicker

If you saved out another copy using streaming, it should be exactly the same as the original... Well almost

You have all the codec's ? (Nimo Codec Pack) Divx 5 ?

OK, after the scan it reported nothing wrong, so no need to worry about junk frames then.

    Lets start from scratch
1, load AVI into Vdub and select file > File information
That will tell us what we are dealing with

If you play the AVI in WMP is it OK from start to finish ?
If you load the original AVI into TMPGEnc does it start to convert OK

Have you higher the direct Show filters in TMPGEnc ?
    Select options > environmental settings
    click the VFAPI plug-in tab
right click the "DirectShow" and select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4
