I am trying to help a friend figure out what's causing TMPGEnc to go to a black screen at around 50% during encoding. All is fine up to that point . The encoding process continues to work but the preview screen just goes dark. She checked the final MPG file and sure enough it goes dark as well so it is actually happening in the final output as well. I have looked around here as well the FAQ on the TMPGEnc site but haven't came up with anything. Any ideas?

    Thanks..

One other thing I meant to mention was that she has tried 3 different files and they all do the same thing..

mm, well install the "Nimo codec pack anyway". Use Vdub to scan for junk frames, maybe there are some at 50% into the movie.

Vdub > Scan video stream for errors
    Video > direct stream copy
    Audio > Direct stream copy
    SAVE AVI
    Save as Movie2.avi

    TMPGEnc
    Select options > environmental settings
    click the VFAPI plug-in tab
right click the "DirectShow" and select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4

    Load VCD template
    START

  4. it is normal for the screen to go black for half the encode, this is when its doing the first pass normally when doing a 2 pass encode

  6. Try setting the source range. If you're doing Divx and not setting the source range than that might be the problem.

Ah, when you said 50%, I thought you were talking about half way through the movie.

The first pass will be black

  8. He/she didnt say anything about about 2 pass VBR...he/she said it goes black after the 50% mark when encoding. In 2 Pass, the first 50% is black, which everyone knows!

  10. touche!

But I believe this is just a source range problem. Selecting the full movie as the source range should make it stop. One way to tell would be to use the preview and see when the movie stops. This happens to me with some divx files....not sure why, but the source range usually takes care of it.
