  1. Hi.

I would like to capture movies from my VHS connection into my computer so I can burn them onto VCD and/or SVCD

    System:

    - Athlon 700mh
    - 384mb SDRAM
    - Leadtek Geforce DDR
    - Windows XP

I would like to know what is the cheap route to be able to capture movies in *real-time* without good to exceptional quality. I have limited HDD space (4 gig). I need the best hardware for the money.

    - ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500 w/ capture
    - Capture Card

In summary, I would like to know what is the best capture hardware for under $150 and works well in Windows XP.

    Thanks,
    Kuphryn

  2. If you have the ATI AIW, you can capture real-time mpeg in software. You have to try and see if the quality is good enough for you.
Otherwise, to get a PCI hardware mpeg real-time capture card, the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-250 for $150 is the best real time encoder you can currently get. http://steve.kittelsen.com/pvr250

  4. I have an AIW Radeon and have not had any issues with the quality when capturing to MPEG1 VCD 2.0. I did have to tweak it a bit in order for it to work properly. The standard VCD settings are not VCD 2.0 compiant. Stinky's reg tool can fix that. And the disablemacrovision patch works as advertised.

  5. You might want to consider upping your CPU, even a 1.2G Duron (~$60 [USD] if your board will take it), would probably allow you to capture with higher motion estimation.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
