I have been downloading avi files of things to burn as a vcd a lot, but I don't understand something. Why not share these files on kazaa as mpg/vcd ready files to start with instead of avi files that you have to convert(which takes a lot longer than it would to d/l them in vcd format)?
I have found a few mpg/vcd ready files out there, but the avi's far outnumber them. I know I am not the only one who transfers these to vcd, so why not cut out the middle man, so to speak?

The ".avi" files you are talking about are divx files or mpg4. They are more highly compressed which means a much smaller file size. This facilitates downloading/sharing. Downloading a dvd/svcd or even vcd would represent a serious committment of time and bandwidth, so folks use divx. I personally watch everything on tv and find that divx to vcd conversion to be of a low enough quality to really not be worth it. But quality is a very personal choice.

I agree with tardis316,
The file size issue is pointless...the only avi's that are of descent enough quality to convert to VCD(or even watch) are in the 700-750 mb range....All my movies as Non-standard VCD are 780 mb or smaller mpeg1, so all ya have to spend time on is the download then just burn.
If I am going to download a 700+mb file...it might as well be mpeg1. -
One thing to consider is that if we didn't have to do anything except download and burn (no transcoding, no frameserving, no cutting, etc.), we would have much less to argue about on boards like these, haha.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
