  1. I can capture my DV camcorder directly to my PC quite happily through the firewire connections. I would like to transfer some old VHS tapes onto SVCD/ DVD, I don`t want to buy a video capture card if possible, is there a converter that will allow a VHS recorder/ player to play in via a firewire connection?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

yes - a standalone s-video / comp. to firewire convertor.

Canopus ADVC-100 is one of the better ones and not to expensive --

Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge is another and ussually a little less money (but not by much).

  3. What DV camcorder do you have, some can be used as analogue to digital converters. Hence you plug your VHS into your camcorder and plug your camcorder into your firewire card. You can then capture your VHS via firewire. You may already have what you need to do the job, you just dont know it.

  5. You cannot capture directly from an analogue S-VHS vcr or camcorder to the digital Firewire input. You need to convert the analogue signal to the digital one and this would have to be done either by a camcorder with analogue inputs that can convert and then pass the signal through, or via a commercially available analogue/DV converter box.

Canopus sell such a beastie, as do Dazzle and a couple of other companies.
