  1. TOTAL NEWBIE: i want to copy 2 vhs tapes (with best possible quality) to be played on my nephew's pc. i have an 8500dv AIW Radeon 1700 AMD with 1 gig mem/but i also have a Sony TRV30 Camcorder in which i could run the videos through...if i ran it through the camcorder wouldn't the end result be an avi file (?) My nephew seems to want the divx format - here comes the stupid questions: which method would be better AND what's the easiest way to burn the files onto cds so that he would be able to view it on his pc. (he has a dvd player on his pc, however he is not interested in playing it on a stand alone dvd player.) Thanks very much for your help.

Some people were talking about running through camcorder to defeat macro vision or when they don't have a capture card....But if I was you I'd just capture straight using capture card...
The format that you capture in depends on your card and the software you are using...for example..I have a pinacle card that I've only got to work using its software which captures to its own (hardly compressed avi files) format ..for a huge 2gb per about 17 minutes of video....so my hour is like 4 diff 2.1gb files or so.
I then convert that to divx4 avi's so I can have a smaller file to work with.

If your nephew just wants to watch on PC then divx avi is probly best compression least loss format...but for that he doesn't even need a dvd drive ...just a cdrom drive. You would just burn the avi file to cd like you do any data files.....
