i have used powervcr2 and virtualdubing which had better quality avi file but i am still not happy my setting with virtualdubbing
video compression i used mircosoftmpeg 4 video codec v1 and put the sharpness to max and data rate to max and audio to pcm 44.100khz 16 bits stereo 172 kb\sec .and format to 352x 288 rgb555 16 bit(and used nero to encode) virtualdubbing wouldnt let me put the resolution up for some reason because i was going to use tmpgenc to resize it can some one help thanks

    Try the following:

    Virtualdub
    +
Huffy AVI Codec (make sure you have lots of drive space, 2:1 to 3:1 compression, but lossless)
    +
ADPCM Codec audio (should be included in Windows, 4:1 compression)

    Then

Encode with either TMPGEnc (look for early version) or CCE (free to test, but not to keep)...

    You will NOT regret it.

I use this setup, 480x480 captures, virtually no loss of frames (except for V-Dub correcting the sound card issue) and it's like encoding from DVD source video.

I wouldn't capture to MPEG, MPEG-2 unless you absolutely must, I also wouldn't use NERO to do anything but make audio or data CD's.

BTW: what hardware are you using? This might effect the max capture size...

and, did you try "custom capture format" in V-Dub? This is the only way I can specify my 480x480...

Try capturing 480x576 YUV2. If virtual dub doesn't let you choose XXX x 576 resolutions, try switching to preview mode (Many capture cards can't deal with the both fields when in overlay mode). Picvideo MJPEG at quality setting 19 should give as good results as Huffuv but with a lot better compression (if you don't have hundreds of gigabytes to spend).

CCE gives the best encoding quality, but TMPGEnc will do too. Never use Nero for SVCD / VCD encoding. You're capturing from analog cam, so I would try to encode as 352x576 interlaced XSVCD with video bitrate around 1800. This gives alot better quality than standard VCD. Try if your player supports this format (if it plays SVCD it'll play this too)

TMPGenc acts strange with Mjpeg avis....
Old (ver 12, 12a) worked better with pic video for example IMO
With Huggyuv, you have better results if you use the newer tmpgenc plus versions
With CCE, both codex work great!
