screen capturing software issue

hi all. I have a screen capturing software issue. It's capturing what i want on the screen. It's saving everything to an .avi file, which i can play back with windows media player. That's not the bad part. There are OTHER things on the screen which it is also capturing.

Photo editors have little utilities where you can erase part of a photo. If you had a best friend at one time, and they are no longer your best friend, you can take them out of a photo. Are there any of the same utilities in any video editors? I just wanna erase ads that are in the capture.

Anyone have an ideas how i would do this? I remember Virtualdub having a plug-in that will erase a logo, like the one from, say, NBC, from a captured tv show, so when you play back the finished product, the logo isn't there. Does anyone know if that would help with what i wanna do? thanks a lot for your help, in advance!
