I am trying to convert home video shot on a Panasonic digital camcorder for buring to a DVD-R. I had thought I would get identical video from the miniDV footage, but it does not look quite as good as the original miniDV.
I am editing with premiere, then frameserving to TMPGEnc, and using the DVD settings for high quality from the vcdhelp page, but the picture is not as good even at 9800CBR. Other encoders produce similar results. Is this just due to the conversion to mpeg2, or should the DVD be indistinguishable from the original miniDV.
I assume that professional DVDs get by with 6000CBR due to better quality source material? Can anyone clarify this for me? Should my quality be better that it is? Can a DVD exactly replicate the quality of miniDV?
Thank you!

Try enconding directly from Premiere using cinemacraft plug-in. Or if you don't have that, create a new AVI file from your edited project and encode that AVI using cinemacraft or TMPEG. I have transfered Laser Discs using this method in Premiere and Avid Xpress and gotten great results. (MPEG plugin with Avid is much slower than cinemacraft however.)

i had the same type problems. mostly with a bunch of scan lines in fast motion stuff . I fixed this by taking my dv avi file ( captured in premiere and edited & rendered in vegas video ) and i use Tmpegc . I tell it to encode interlaced. Then i go to the source page and tell it that its progressive (non-interlaced) . this gives me perfect quality every time.
good luck!
