Hi all, apollogies in advance for the newbie questions.
Just had a nipper and want to buy a camcorder to record her ifrst movemnets on etc, so will be looking at getting through a lot of media.
I have lookes at dvd camcorders but am put off somewhat as the media seems to only hold small amounts of recording, and editing is difficult.
Would like to avoid a hd camcorder as the price is a bit big so am looking at Minidv.
Can anyone advise if it really is as simple as hooking up to the dvd recorder on my telly and buring from the camcorder to make a dvd, playable in noraml dvd players?
And if the answer is yes, what quality can i expect the dvd to be, i know a lot will depend on the actuall camcorder model, dvd recorder media etc but as a rule of thumb is the quality ok, as i would like to avoid upping it to pc and encoding it through nero or whatever, as i know doing a film can take hours.
Many thanks.
Baz

1) Avoid DVD cameras. DV is much better.
2) Yes, if the DVD recorder has DV/FireWire/iLink, it's that easy to create a Video DVD from your camcorder footage. It will be a realtime process; 1 hour of footage will take 1 hour to transfer from cam to DVD.
And - Once you realize you can't just take your video and write it to disk, but you must edit it, add transitions, text, cut some parts out, rearrange the order of events & cetera - DV is the format that lends itself best to that kind of exercise.

Cheers mate, wont need to do much editing at first, just want to get some footage of the nipper to send my missus parents back home in Aus, but will start to learn once ive got the camera, how does SAMSUNG VP-D371W MINI DV compete as a beginners starting camera?

I don't know if the US models are any better, but in a recent test by the UK Consumers Association, Samsungs came out bottom at just about everything! Personally I favour Sony, Panasonics seem to regularly burn out the DV port (or at least quite a few people on here have had problems with fried Firewire ports on Panasonics but not on any other models).
See what you can find and then check out the reviews on www.camcorderinfo.com to see which they reckon is the best.
