Most home DVD players can read manufactured VCD's, but not all can read home-made ones. The reason is the laser light needed to read manufactured VCD's is different than the light needed to read CD-R or CD-RW VCD's. Newer DVD players use a dual laser or dual optic laser pickup so they can read manufactured and home-made VCD's.
You may want to experiment with different brands of CD-RW's as some of the older DVD players can sometimes read one brand, but not others. Same thing may be true of CD-R's, but generally CD-R's are not readable by older DVD players.
