  1. Hi guys!

Got a big problem which I hope you can help sort out for me.
Last weekend I reformatted my system drive and installed XP
    (previously on Win98se).

All seemed to be fine .... until I put a DVD in my Pioneer 104 -
it won't read it, or any DVD commercial or blank for that matter!
All it does is spin up the disk, make a few clunking noises (like
the laser has reached the end of it's track) and stop after around
30 seconds. XP reports "No Disk In Drive "

It's OK with CDs though and will read and burn them without
    a fault.

I've tried the usual stuff like changing the IDE buss from UDMA to PIO
and making sure that my 104 is set to Master etc etc. - no luck
Also turning AutoPlay and AutoNotification off and updating my ASPI
    layer to the latest version.

I rebooted with Win98se and the drive operates perfectly, so I know that
the firmware is fine (v1.20 - latest) and also that the drive hasn't
    developed a fault!

Thinking that it could be the fault of some of the software I've got
installed I deinstalled them all but it had no effect.
    They were :

    Nero 5.5.9.0
    CDRWin 3.8g
    PrimoDVD 2.0

MB/IDE Chipset : VIA4in1 (latest XP driver set)
    OS : Win XP pro
    RAM : 512Mb DDR

Hope I've given you all the info you'll need guys .....

Any help would be MUCH appreciated

    Cheers!

  2. You might need to install an ASPI layer for XP (although I wouldn't bet any money on that) .
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  5. You may want to try switching the mode of the IDE channel that the drive is on again. The problems you are describing are usually fixed by doing so. Weird that it didn't work when tested before, but I would try again and then try loading a commercial dvd.

I originally had the same problem and switched from UDMA to PIO and back to UDMA but later realized that I was testing the drive with some bad blank Princo media. When I threw in some good blank media or a commercial disc it finally worked in UDMA mode for me, although most people that report such problems usually need to switch to PIO.

  6. I downloaded my ASPI layer from www.xp-erience.org cos I thought that it'd be a safe bet that it would work with XP !!

However, the ASPICHK (aspi check) tool reports the version installed as 2.60 ...... can somebody tell me where I can get hold of 2.71 (or whatever is the latest version)??

I'll also try switching my IDE mode back to UDMA if you think it may help ..... to be honest, I'll try anything right now!

    Cheers for the help folks!

  8. Thanks for that URL mate ..... I'll give it a shot tonight .......

I'm not holding my breath though - I installed the latest Adaptec ASPI layer yesterday (4.71) and it made no difference!

Also tried my old VIA 4in1 IDE drivers ...... and changed between UDMA and PIO and few times ..... still no joy

Guess I'm gonna have to do a complete re-install and test the drive at every step to trace the problem - can't say I'm looking forward to that

If you guys have anymore thoughts, please let me know !!!

    Cheers!
