  1. Can anybody tell me why when I encode a divx source movie in vcd format, and encode the same movie in svcd format the vcd format and svcd format are about the same quality.

  2. One possible explanation could be that the source video is shabby enough that there isn't any opportunity for the higher bandwidth of the SVCD format to exhibit any difference vs VCD.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

    Hello pal,

There is yet another possible explenation.
From my experience, on a 29" TV set, there is no apparent differnece between the resolution of SVCD and CVD. If you encode both in a high enough bitrate, or if there is no fast movements in the original, you will not have blockiness in either format. CVD advantage over SVCD is that at a given bitrate there is less chance for blockiness. If you don't have blockiness in a given source at a given bitrate, there will be no apparent difference between the two.

    Take care

The query was for SVCD and VCD, not CVD. What I want to know, is what players play this new "standard" since it's legit aparently only in China. There is no listing for compatability of players under the DVD Players list on this site. Anyone have any links?

    Hello pal,

The video of CVD is 1/2 DVD horizintal resolution, same vertical resolution. The audio of CVD is 44.1KHz, like VCD, while DVD audio is 48KHz.
Since video resoluton of CVD is compatible with DVD and the audio is the same as VCD, it seems to me that any standalone DVD player which can play VCD will play CVD.
This is my assumption. Anyone have different experience?

    Take care

Oldfart (clever name??) Were there 12 people prior to you that had oldfart

I own an apex 1100w (1mb) with the region free and macrovision hack (not important for your question regarding what standalones play CVD, but I am proud of it, LOL) and it plays CVD (actually this apex player which costs about $60 at wallyworld plays just about everything you can through at it, standard, nonstandard, whatever). Remote sucks. This is what you'll hear about the apex 1100w.[/quote]

    dcapp1 asked about VCD & SVCD,not CVD.Mirror_Image is probably
correct, but you might want to tweak your settings in TMPGEnc or whatever

Your source must be the problem. DiVX is already a compressed format from the original source. Since you are simply "re-encoding" it to another compressed format, you lose even more. In this case, it's not a good comparison between VCD and SVCD. It's kinda like if you took a 256 kbps MP3 and converted it to both a 192 and 128 kbps, you might not notice the difference between the two new files. However, if you would encode directly from CD, you could better notice a difference between 192 and 128.

SVCD is clearly better when you start from the original source (like DVD MPEG-2).
