  1. Hello all!
I am attempting to get "Rose Red" ripped before I have to return the DVDs to the video store. Something REALLY strange is going on here: I ripped the DVD with no problems, and everything seemed fine. When I tested my MPEGS before burning the CDs. (I am creating VCDs out of this movie) I found that the movie is not starting at the beginning. I played around with the VOB files a bit with DVD2AVI and found that the beginning of the movie actually starts about 90% of the way into the 4th VOB file! For the life of me, I can not figure out how to get this encode properly. I have tried several different rippers and thus far, I am not having any luck. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Understand the way most ripper work is that they find the BIGGEST files as a set and say "Okay, this must be the movie files". They dont always know though.

Here is an easy way to do this manually if your having issues.

If you have WINDVD or POWERDVD, you can VIEW the individual VOB files. Find your movie parts.

Use SMARTRIPPER (you can find the link here in the guides) and select ONLY the VOB's you want and the IFO file thats associate with it OR...Let smart ripper pick them all.

Use DVD2AVI but when you select the 4 or 5 movie files del the ones that are EXTRA. I am sure if you find that it starts with VOB X_04 (x being some number) then x_5, X_06 and X_07 will follow in order.
Generally on a DVD you will see

    1_00
    1_01
    1_02
    etc
    2_01
    2_02
    2_03
    etc

VOB files and one IFO (information file) per set of VOBs. Smart ripper and such pics the movie VOBS and 1 associated IFO.'

Then DVD2AVU takes all VOBS for that set after you open the first. So all you have to do is RIP, view each VOB, delete the extra's and use DVD to AVI to setup.

    Hope this helped

  3. Thanks for the reply!
This doesn't appear to be the problem. It's not that I am not getting all the correct VOB files or the correct IFO, as I have verfied all of this. I have even tried rearranging the order of the VOB files using DVD2AVI and the problem is the same: The beginning of the movie is near the end of the 4th vob file. I can run the 4th VOB file by itself and somewhere near the end is the movie intro (about 90% thru), and the beginning of the 4th VOB is somewhere around half way thru the movie. It's very odd. I can not find a way to get any of the various programs (and I am pretty sure I have nearly ALL of the available rippers, encoders, etc) to put the files in correct order. I would have thought that the IFO would tell what order they should go in, but it shows then in proper numerical order. I have read in this forum that many other people have had problems with Stephen King's movies, ie, The Green Mile, etc. Could the people producing his DVDs be using a special sort of encryption? Doesn't matter now, as I had to return the movie. I should say that I ran into a posting on another forum where a woman was having the exact problem I had with the same movie. If anyone figures this one out, PLEASE share with the rest of us!

    Thanks to all!

Well, there is another way if you know the sequence of events.

Using TMPG, select the SOURCE RANGE for each section (You can drag the bar and see it all high speed ) and make your movie parts. Very similar to cutting a moving into 12 parts to have 6 menu items per disk.

    Other than that...It is a STUMPER !

  5. Thanks, once again, for replying!

I am going to guess that such a method of ripping is going to have the result of seriously unsynchronized audio/video? I could be wrong, but anything I have ever tried to manually split a movie after ripping and encoding, the second CD of the movie always has the audio out of synch! Very annoying! I guess this movie is really not worth ALL this trouble, but it's just one of those things....I don't like when ANYTHING related to my computers beats me down....I get determined to figure it out! lol

    Thanks anyway!

    No...No sync problem. Normal processing.

Example. You have 2 hours worth of movie, it will NOT fit on one disk. So under the settings tab, you CHECK the source range box then double-click the SOURCE range line.

It brings up a view of the movie with a slider bar. You move the slider to the beginning (you see the movie whiz by) and press SET START RANGE.

Now you slid ethe bar to somewhere in the middle, finding a scene transition. There are two buttons to the right that let you find the exact spot by holidng down , forward and reverse. REALLY easy. When found, you press SET END RANGE.

Now you have the 1/2 of a movie range, you encode. Bingo. Do the same with other half and done . Easy right ? Normal and no sync problems.

So lets take it a step further. You don't want tow BIG movie scenes because on your VCD, it means you can only ADVANCE a step the whole movie. So instead of HALF a movie, you break that first half into 10 minute sections (almost, you have to do it at scene transitions for best results). So you get
    0-10 minutes
    10-20
    20-30
    30-40
    40-50
    50-60
etc etc...Until say all 120 minutes are broken up.

Now you BURN with NERO using the MENU and guess what ? First half has six 10 minute scenes, part 1 , part 2, etc. and each can have a mini picture (nero takes the first frame from each and makes it for you ALL AUTOMATIC)

DO the same with second half.

My point is, as long as you do this within TMPG, there are no SYNC problems.

Does this make sense ? Help ? Hope so...Best to you

I have just completed the Rip and Encoding of Rose Red myself. Ripped with SmartRipper, frameserved with dvd2avi and encoded with TMPGEnc.
I too found that the movie started in the middle. So I used the Merge/Cut tool in TMPGEnc and scrolled through the movie and found the beginning to be at 1:27:57 in the first Mpeg. I cut the Mpeg in two parts using the aforementioned time to the end of the file and named it Part1 and from the start to 1:27:57 named Part2. Disk 2 ripped with no problems.
So at the moment I have 3 parts, each being 600+ megs. But I'm working on cutting it down to fit it on 2 CD's instead of 3.

    Hope this helps.

ROSE RED strikes again !! Glad I remembered this being posted here.

Is this a new way of PREVENTING ripping ? I used smartripper and when I went to DVD2AVI, I noticed the first part was around middle of first part of movie.

So I scrolled around and it seems like it goes 5 , 1 2, ..who knows..On the VOBS. I played the VOBs and at least three have directors commentaries !! Uggg

I saw the above post and will try just doing it that way, go 1:27 in, cut that, then add the first 1;27 Were all the parts there ????

What did you do for disk 2 ????

    Thanks in advance....

  9. I just recently ripped rose red using Claddvdxp, then used Tmpgenc to convert to mpeg. Both of which are freeware. I didn't experience any problems burning the mpegs to cdr. Should you have any questions please feel free to email me.
