  1. I am editing language out of some dvd's so the kids can watch. I am dvd ripping, then converting to svcd. Where would it be best to edit? Edit the svcd mpg? Or should I convert the dvd rip to a divx avi and then edit?
I don't know if I'll edit the audio alone, or just cut out non critical senes all together.

By preferance edit the audio alone, it cuts a lot of headaches about transcoding etc. But if you do do this REPLACE any audio with silence/beeps etc don't delete it as it will cause audio sync problems.

If you do edit the video directly, unless you have access to a frame accurate Mpg editor you are generally better editing it in the captured format then transcoding. It really depends on your hardware/software setup.

  3. Thanks for the input Brett.
What software do you use to edit the audio wav file? I have only done it before with the old Creative Labs wave studio.
In the case of trying to edit the video, you say edit before transcoding, the avi. In the case of fixing one of my dvd movies for the kids, would you convert it to a divx avi? I am assuming you can't edit the vob files.

I use Audacity for basic audio editing. It's free, it runs on every major platform, and it's easy for basic stuff like trimming clips or silencing pieces of sound clips. They just released version 1.0, which I haven't tried yet, but I've been using the 0.9x beta versions and they've been completely stable and reliable.
